Free Music Notes for We'll Never Turn BackFree Music Review: Mavis Makes Pops Proud--And Continues The Movement Hit: 5 Stars
This is an album that will stay in your top ten permanent rotation for life. It reminds us of where we were, where we need to be, and where we should have been by now--all the while delivering the amazing voice of Mavis Staples and the depth of production that only Ry Cooder can deliver. Buy it.
Mavis returns with abandon. Her voice is right where we all want it--at the top of her game. She still kills. Heck--she's better now than she was during the time of The Band's: The Last Waltz.
And more relevant as Civil Rights are still regularly Civil Wrongs more than a half century into the movement.
Buy it because it is one of the top two albums on the planet during the past year.
Or as I note in a more recent review, buy this and a copy of the linked album here--and decide which you like better. Recapturing the Banjo
And then:
*** Otis? If you or Cassie are reading this, I'll buy THIS ALBUM for you. Then you guys decide. Mavis? If you or Mssr. Cooder are reading this, I'll buy Otis Taylor's Newest for you. You guys decide. Until then, It's a tie. Buy both.***
Free Music Review: A recording that a Mavis, Ry, Staples, gospel or blues fan should NOT be without Hit: 5 Stars
This is a recording of a once in a lifetime music/magic/spiritual collaboration between one of the great voices of the past 50 years in gospel/pop/blues and one of the great guitarists in blues/rock/world beat.
There was magic when Mavis sang with her Dad, Pops; one of the great guitar influences on rock and blues. With all due respect, there's just as much going on here; only new and different.
Pop's songwriting, guitar and voice were shoulders that Bob Dylan ("If I had a Hammer"/"Wish I had Answered") the Stones ("May be the Last Time", "Shana boom boom") and Ry himself stood upon along with everyone else who was influenced by them.
There's something greater here than just the sum of the artists talents before they made this recording. Something came out of this collaboration that was great, in and of itself. Listen to the clips on here and you'll hear it.
This is as good as any record I've ever heard. The best.
Free Music Review: Mavis & Ry: The perfect combination Hit: 5 Stars
Mud gave me this to listen to as he knew I really liked Ry Cooder.
From the first track I was gob-smacked.
This was the Ry I had come to know and love on his early albums: very sparse arrangements, deep bass, Jim Keltner on drums and of course the slide master, Ry himself.
What about Mavis you ask???
Sure, I'd heard of the Staples Singers and knew a couple of their hits from the 70's ("Respect Yourself" , "I'll Take You There" ) but that was about it. I was in for a surprise.
Mavis "owns" the old gospel numbers as if they were her own personal themes. She also injects new indignation at the issues of today as she did in the 60s civil rights movements. The voice and conviction are strong and the message is clear: "Have a look around yourself. Get your act together. Hallelujah!"
Free Music Review: Less is More: This Album is SU-PERB Hit: 5 Stars
This album is a tribute to difficult days, but days filled with high idealism and hope that we could overcome. To some degree we have, but there is still more to do, which Mavis Staples makes clear in her choices of Civil Rights-era anthems and spirituals that soar to life in this wonderful collection.
Musically, the album is simply outstanding, with emphasis on the word simply. Staples' smoky voice is fabulous. The decision to use very basic arrangements (on occasion, just a drum and a bass or a guitar accompany the singer), was genius. It is rare to find anything new under the sun, but Mavis Staples has come forward with a brilliant and moving entry that shines brightly by returning to the sound of a less sophisticated time.
Free Music Review: Mavis Staples' voice will give you wings Hit: 5 Stars
Mavis Staples' voice will make you soar. She's an inspiration to us all just singing. When you consider the life story of Mavis and her family it is just mind blowing.
The first time I heard "Respect Yourself" back on AM radio, the song became a mantra for me. That song's on my iPod as part of the music that keeps me going during the hard times.
"We'll Never Turn Back" is so full of inspiring music, it's almost impossible to choose a couple to talk about. Every song is uplifting and every time I listen, I hear something different.
I sincerely hope this CD is not pigeonholed into just one genre--people who love R&B, gospel, folk, blues and just plain great music are going to love this CD.
