Free Music Notes for We'll Never Turn BackFree Music Review: The Real Deal ,Ms. Mavis Staples, sending chills up my spine! Hit: 5 Stars
I had the opportunity and pleasure of performing on the same Show With the Legendary Ms. Mavis Staples in Italy,December 2005, and it was one of the greatest moments in my Life! What you hear on this record is the kind of songs that made the Staple Singers and Mavis Staples Legendary! The Contemporary, funky yet true-to-the-tradition way That Mavis delivers these freedom songs/traditional gospel and spirituals just sends chills up your spine! Her vocal delivery is unique to her and I have never heard it duplicated by anyone else. This CD Reminds me of the old Staple Singers Records me and my brothers used to listen to back in the Sevenities! Needs to be nominated for a Grammy!! 20 stars!
Free Music Review: Amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
I absolutely love Mavis Staples, and this album is no exception. Some of the best updating of classic Civil Rights Movement songs I've ever heard. Hands down her best album. This should be the album of the year, no question about it.
I had to stop what I was doing the first time I was listening to it and it came to the song "Eyes on the Prize" it was still such a moving song. Sadly, many of the songs still have meaning in current American culture. Even more reason we shouldn't forget the messages of those who fought in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's.
Free Music Review: Exceptional CD Hit: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful mix of traditional (Eyes on the Prize, We Shall Not Be Moved etc.) and original recordings (My Own Eyes, I'll Be Rested etc.). Traditional renditions, Gospel, Soul, Folk, R&B all combined with wonderful, soulful singing with excellent collaboration from Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner etc.
Along with the exceptional music, this CD should make all of us appreciate how far we've come and still need to go (in many areas of life). One of the best CDs of 2007 to date.
Should make you want to clap your hands and sing.
Free Music Review: CD of the year contender Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a fan of hers & the Staple Singers for many years, since their radio hits of the early '70s. On this CD, she returns to many of the songs which were staples during the 60s civil rights era. With great production by Ry Cooder, this is one of the best new releases I've heard this year. I happened to catch her on a PBS newshour segment last evening, performing some of the songs from "We'll Never Turn Back" and being interviewed. Currently on tour, check her out if she comes to your town.
Free Music Review: THIS is Soul music.... Hit: 5 Stars
Accept no substitute.... Mavis & Ry together? Hallelujah, brothers and sisters! If we lived in Utopia, then this is what radio stations would A-list programme as "R'n'B", instead of the fidgety processed pap for mallrats that they peddle. Yeah, I know that junk sells, but this is real people playing real instruments with a rare commodity in music today: humanity, soul... call it what you will. Essential for anyone who thinks they know music. Here endeth the lesson!
