This is a great c.d.,those of us who remember the civil rights movement of the 60s, will especially like it , although anyone can.It has a real analog type tone, earthy and bluesy and speaks of real important feelings and the life and times of sooo many of our fellow countryman. This is a real good c.d. shes done "good stuff here"
Free Music Review: We'll never turn back Hit: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this cd very much. I had listened to the Staples singers years ago and was glad to see Mavis recording again.
Free Music Review: Spectacular voice Hit: 3 Stars
Multi-talented and ever expanding artist Ry Cooder surprises again, focusing his attention and Mida's touch on the sound of black America, a particular gospel-meets-New-Orleans sound, almost menacing atmosphere.
One of soul's all-time greats Mavis Staples takes a spotlight here and she is served well by Cooder who assembles real strong, woodoo vibrations around her and makes Staples sound like a sorceress. She truly has sensational voice, always had and for me this is true queen of soul, not the other one from Detroit.
All is well with music but its ultimately up to listener to decide about other aspects of this album - subjects of these songs are grim, often harrowing and hair-raising. Contrary to album's title,Staples opens some old wounds and goes half a century back.
Its powerful, for sure, but not kind of music listener returns light-heartedly. While her work with Staple Singers often had inspirational message for human race as whole - uplifting and strong - this time, combination of music, lyrics and scary atmosphere results with disturbing pictures ("In The Mississippi River") that are true but don't make this world better place,it just sticks in your mind for the rest of the day.
Maybe that was the point.
Free Music Review: disappointing Hit: 3 Stars
If this CD is a disappointment (as I found it to be), it's in part because the cast - Mavis Staples, Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner, Ladysmith Black Mambazo - gets one's expectations up so very high. But this recording, despite the caliber of the musicians, sounds surprisingly lifeless. It all seems so calculated, so produced. Mavis's voice, which (as often happens as singers age) has grown husky over the years, just doesn't have the fire it once had. Noble intentions, yes; great music, no. One keeps waiting for some fresh air, for some sort of spark, for some sense of real in-the-moment immediacy. But, sadly,it never comes.
Free Music Review: Not as gripping as her live recording Hit: 3 Stars
This recording was overproduced - mushy lifeless arrangements. Thank you Ry.
The later live recording of much of this set ( minus Ry's influence thank God ) Live: Hope At The Hideout is much more funky and rewarding
