Free Music Notes for NowFree Music Review: NOW IS NOW Hit: 5 StarsFor well over a year or two I own Mr.Maxwell's NOW cd,I too listen to it and compared it to his other music,I should not have, his cd's and even the cut on the Sweetback's first without Sada are all for a past season, for what ever reasons I failed to understand the impact of the music and words...it is a small wonder that no new music has come forth ,if we can not keep up with the man,why should he stand still, needless to say,I NOW enjoy this cd so much I play it all the time and get down with the way he uses his voice,it is all that and more,I play it loud in the car, he use his voice to get each song out,r&b,soul and more, the music is the Bomb.I think anyone who truly is deep, can feel this cd and just groove on..if you just want to dance then just dance...this is more than the other cds..and more than a cd for dancing, hear the man out....
Free Music Review: For the record, It's 3.5 stars Hit: 3 StarsConcerning Now, for any other R&B singer that's cranked out today and has only a little talent, this would be a good effort. For someone like Maxwell on the other hand, this is mediocre. Embrya was a much better album and Urban Hang Suite is unmatched in my opinion. But this album feels underproduced and lacking the "umph" that put him on the musical map.
I've read that Maxwell wants to expand his music and not just keep churning out replicas of Urban Hang Suite, and I admire him for that. But I would have expected better after a three year hiatus. I certainly hope his next album (which is another one that's pushed back) makes up for now. With all that gimicky tripe that out now, Maxwell is more essential than ever, and he is WAY too talented to be another star fading out of the spotlight.
Free Music Review: Urban Hang Suite Hit: 5 StarsI regard Urban Hang Suite as one of the best Soulful Album ever being produced; I give it more than 5 stars.I rank it with the Mervin Gaye's and Curtis Mayfield's. Simply the best. I love the Suite theme track 11. Maxwell you rock man !!!! Lastly Musze - When are you doing shows in South Africa?, we still waiting for your soulful voice.
Free Music Review: Theres no one quite like him Hit: 4 StarsMost people who like Maxwell's music would identify this album as the weak one. Its only weak simply because the first two were outstanding.
"Now" has a different feel to the others, and was set out to have more cross over appeal. The lyrics are not as deep and meaningful, but the music is still very good.
The album kicks off with perhaps its best track "Get To Know Ya". Its a track which is very catchy and talks about Maxwell simply getting to know a very nice lady. Lacks the depth in which "Sumthin Sumthin" had from the debut set, but still a track to look at.
My personal favourite on the album is "No One" which has gone into my top 3 Maxwell songs of all time. I recommend you by the album for this track alone. Shades of Prince are evident, but there is something about Maxwell's style that makes it his own.
"Temporary Nite" is another stormer. So funky you will fall off your chair. Maxwell dips into the rock/funk that prince did so successfully. To be honest this Track could have easily been the one I was saying was the best on here. Its that damn good.
Ballad wise, there are some nice track. "For Lovers Only" is nice but no where near previous efforts such as "Till The Cops" and "Drown deep".
"Was/My Girl" is better, but still lacks a certain edge that we know Maxwell can deliver.
On his Mtv Unplugged, set of a few years previous he did a cover of "This Womans Work" which was made famous by Kate Bush. He didn't include it on the Embrya album but has doen so here. Its not as good as that live version but it is still a fantastic cover. He makes it his own, and anyone who knows the orginal will know that is a hard thing to do. Actually, trying to cover any Kate Bush track is going to be a task.
"Now/At the Party" is the final track which is again very funky. A long muscial intro is mixed into Maxwell's cool soulful voice, to end the album on a high.
"Now" is not as memorable as his first two. But it still has its moments. Maxwell is a true performer in my eyes, and I cannot wait for his next set because I am almost certain there will be many tracks on there like on here which you just sit back and say, 'yeah'.
Free Music Review: love of my life Hit: 5 StarsMy optimism is high when it comes to Maxwell. I truly think there's not one male artist (or female artists) out there who compares to him. I'm still waiting for a fourth full-length album, we can't just stop at Now...there's gotta be more of the soul master.
