Free Music Notes for Maybe This ChristmasFree Music Review: a wonderful mix. Hit: 4 Stars
i was excited to listen to this album from the moment i read the track listing and artists. i must say that some of the songs take time to grow on you (and some never will). but all in all - it was a fantastic album. "God rest ye merry gentleman" by the barenaked ladies and sarah mclachlan was beyond perfect. the voices and styles blended wonderfully. coldplay's rendition of "have yourself a merry little christmas" was chilling and beautiful. phantom planet added thier touch of playful seriousness to "winter wonderland." it was a great listen. jack johnson, sense field, and ben folds also brought their full-on style to the mix. and the last track worth mention was "blue christmas" by bright eyes. this song was a glorifed version of the one you hear in a diner around the holiday season. it was dark but still kept that countryesque charm.
i would recommend this album to anyone trying to mix it up with regards to holiday music. enjoy (i know i did).
Free Music Review: Maybe this Christmas will mean something more. Hit: 4 Stars
This compilation album features Christmas songs by alt-rock performers. The songs are more mellow than you might expect. This is kinder, gentler alt-rock. Around half the songs are originals, with the other half being familar Christmas favorites. All the originals are at least decent, with my favorites being Ron Sexsmith's charming "Maybe This Christmas", Ben Folds' humorous "Bizarre Christmas Incident" and Dan Wilson's New Year's song "What a Year For a New Year". The traditional Christmas songs are all well performed, with Sense Field's cover of John Lennon's "Happy Christmas" being particularly excellent. This is a solid Christmas album, with some of the proceeds going to Toys For Tots.
Free Music Review: Pleasant Christmas Everyone! Hit: 4 Stars
The best "modern" Christmas CD I've come across. The melodies are mostly low-key, so keep looking if you're searching for energy music. Which isn't to say the songs aren't entertaining, the lyrics are usually standard, but there are pockets of cleverness blended in. The songs are mostly pop, being sung by popular artists, but the style varies a bit from Coldplay's crooning, to Loreena McKennitt's more traditional/hymnal track at the end. My favorite song is the cooperative rendition of GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan. Worth the price, good gift idea too. Merry Christmas!

I'm not much of a Christmas song fan, but I love this CD--I bought it mostly because of Dan Wilson, but I really enjoy all of the songs on it so far. Ben Folds's "Bizarre Christmas Incident" is bizarre indeed. Dan Wilson's "What a Year for a New Year" is gorgeous. Jack Johnson's new verses for Ruldolph are lovely as well, and all in all, I recommend this to anyone looking for a slightly different twist on conventional Christmas songs.
Free Music Review: Pretty Good (except for Ben Folds) Hit: 4 Stars
A pretty good Christmas CD. As with all compilation Christmas CDs, there are a couple "oh aren't we so clever" goofy clunkers that threaten to ruin the whole CD. Jimmy Eat World is bad but Ben Folds "Bizarre Christmas Incident" just doesn't belong on a nice, mostly quiet, very-good-bedtime-cd-for-a-five-year-old-yet-good-enough-for-the-parents-to-enjoy-too Christmas CD. When yours is the dumbest song on a CD that also includes Barenaked Ladies, that's bad.
