Free Music Notes for Mediterranean Lullaby
Free Music Review: Disappointing

While this collection is certainly a passable lullaby CD (the songs are soothing and gentle), the Mediterranean aspect of the disc is overplayed.
First, the style of the songs is only faintly Mediterranean. The instrumentation and arrangements are very Western. This makes the CD palatable to Americn ears, but it is not remotely authentic. This failing may stem in part from the fact that many of the artists live in the United States instead of the country the represent on the CD. In any event, very few babies in Mediterranean countries are rocked to sleep with tunes like these.
Second, the vast majority of the tracks represent Europe (Spain, France, and Italy). Asia minor, the Middle East, and North Africa barely factor into the collection. The Euro-centricity of the album is not problematic per se, but will disappoint parents who are seeking an alternative from the popular (and often superior) American and Celtic lullaby CDs.
Overall the CD is not a disaster, but it does come up decidedly short of its billing.
Mediterranean Lullaby Poster
All too often the notion of creating webs of gentle sounds to help ease babies, toddlers, even children into sleep leads to overly synthetic musical concoctions. Mediterranean Lullaby (like its sibling Cuban, Brazilian, Celtic, Latin, African, and Guitar lullaby collections) takes a very different, more organic approach. Here you have singers and music from Mediterranean regions, including Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, and Spain. The music is so unadorned that you can't miss the heartfelt reverence for children, the respect for their ears, and the overall commitment to gentle sweetness. Guitar and vocals are the main fare, but there are mandolins, sentirs, nay flutes, and more--all played as if the musicians were able to show up in your child's room to soothe them after a day at play. --Andrew BartlettFolk Music CDs
