Free Music Review: Endgame - A New Beginning
Hit: 5 Stars

1.) Dialectic Chaos - Powerful riffs erupt onto your speakers, signaling the start of 45 minutes of blistering music; and heralding the triumphant return of Megadeth to the forefront of the metal scene. The solos are intense, more precise than those of Killing is My Business or even Rust in Peace, and are some of the best technical work the band has ever done. New guitarist Chris Broderick puts his best foot forward to start off the record, showing himself to be as competent a musician as 'Deth has ever had (yes, Friedman was excellent, but his style was completely different, so a comparison would be largely irrelevant.) A great instrumental track at least on par with Into the Lungs of Hell, and a perfect intro for the next cut.

2.) This Day We Fight! - "For this I was chosen!" growls Mustaine over several furious layers of thrashing guitars reminiscent of Take No Prisoners. This one is thrash from start to finish, a relentless assault on the senses. Lyrics are great for fans of classic 'Deth, recalling battle scenes from fantasy literature such as Lord of the Rings. Mustaine's singing style sets the tone for the rest of the album: lower-pitched growls than we are used to hearing from him. You won't be hearing too many high soaring vocals ripped from Secret Place or A Tout Le Monde. This continues a trend set by 2007's United Abominations. I personally don't mind it; it's just a different tone.

3.)44 Minutes - A haunting slow guitar piece underneath a blaring police radio: "We are all pinned down by automatic gun fire!" Then, a staggered riff and crawling baseline kick in. So begins the most contemplative track on the record, a personal favorite of mine. Lyrics can get a tad awkward with the phrasing at parts, Mustaine trying to stretch sentences over a couple of lines ("so inSTEAD they WENT for the BANK"). However, there are also moments of songwriting brilliance ("the bowls of wrath poured out on the ground"/"until they shot Achilles' heel and brought down the beast").

4.) 1320 - The sound of a drag car taking off, then a gritty, gainy riff that could have been ripped right off KIMB launch an interesting track with numerous tempo changes. Breakneck guitars punctuate mid-paced verses and choruses, until about the 2:30 mark. Everybody cuts out for a simple fast drum fill that conjures up images of an idling funny car. But it's not idle for long: so begins a solid minute of classic heavy solo-laden thrash that will leave your neck sore for days.

5.) Bite the Hand - Contrasting itself with the previous track, Bite the Hand showcases mid-paced riffs broken up by intense vocal sections that kick in to double time. However, the time changes only provide the framework for some very heavy guitar pieces. The time change shortly after the 3-minute mark has some great dueling solos also. Lyrics are nothing to write home about, however. Solid track.

6.) Bodies - Many have drawn comparisons between this cut and the legendary "Symphony of Destruction." The similarities aren't overbearing, but this definitely would have found a home on Countdown to Extinction. The slower pace and space left by the staggered guitars provide some needed relief after the blazing sections of DC, TDWF, 1320, and BTH. A Tout Le Monde-like contemplative solos hit around 2:30 in, but these are just a set up for the real show, a 30-second thrash fest to close it out. Broderick really shines here, as does good ol' Dave. A climbing-then-diving riff slows the track down to round it off. Good melodic piece.

7.) Endgame - Slow, doomy riffs that would do Tony Iommi proud supply the foundation for this apocalyptic-themed title track. "This is the end of the road/... of the line/...of your life/... the Endgame." Lyrics are haunting and drip with the suspicious attitude of Dave's work on Countdown as well as United Abominations. Once the gallop begins, this track does not disappoint. Guitar work continues to be top-notch (sense a theme here?). The dynamics are excellent, and reflect on Dave's improved musicianship over the years. The song fades out slowly, abandoning you to contemplate the haunting words "Believe me when I say: this is the endgame!"

8.) The Hardest Part of Letting Go... Sealed With a Kiss - Another favorite of mine, THPOLG starts with a pair of eerie picking pieces riding an ambient synth track. Metalheads, fear not! This is not a deleted song from Risk! Once the heavy prog gallop is unleashed a couple minutes in, the track gets really interesting. Great screaming guitars in the back support the Edgar Allen Poe-type tale of love and revenge, reminiscent of Last Rites/Loved to Deth. Pay attention to the lyrics; they are some of the best on the record. No truly epic leads on this one, but a very well-written song.

9.) Head Crusher - The first track so far to match This Day We Fight in intensity, Head Crusher is classic thrash at its finest. Unforgiving chord-changing and "riffs" that would be considered solos for most other bands. Even though I know it's coming, I always jump when it comes on, chasing away what remains of the soothing guitars that close out the previous track. Loses some steam a couple minutes in for one of Dave's pet spoken word sections. But that soon gives way to some excellent soloing to finish the track.

10.) How the Story Ends - The war-themed lyrics really shine on this mid-paced, grooving cut. Nothing too spectacular musically, but Dave paints a great word picture of ancient warriors battling to the death. Solo section 3/4 through is very solid; Broderick is spectacular. I suppose the only real complaint one can have is that it's a little too "samey," not standing out from its brethren on this record. That's almost a compliment I suppose: the record is so good that it's tough for this song to distinguish itself. Not a bad problem for Dave to have!

11.) The Right to Go Insane - Finally! A great bass section, very doomy and crawling. For those who have heard the latest Heaven & Hell record, it's like a sped up version of Butler's piece on "Double the Pain." Really fits in very nicely with the theme of the song. The guitars ring out and leave a lot of space for the drums and bass to drive the tune forward. The chorus is one of the most catchy and melodic on the record. It also has the most personal lyrics on the album. And best of all, there's a minute-long thrasher at the end that closes out this classic thrash CD.

---

Overall, this has now become my second-favorite Megadeth effort, just behind Rust in Peace. Dave combines the musical prowess of his first four records with the songwriting dynamics of CTE, Youthansia, and Cryptic Writings to concoct something truly special. Give it a spin, you will not be disappointed!

Endgame Poster

ENDGAME is the follow-up to the critcally acclaimed return to form United Abominations. The album, produced by Andy Sneap and Dave Mustaine, has been hailed as one of the band's best albums in over a decade. The album includes thrash anthems like the first single 'Head Crusher' as well as the politically charged title track.
