Free Music Review: 'Deths 2nd best only next to RIP
Hit: 5 Stars

Okay...where do I start with this beauty, well, I should start by saying that this is a VERY close 2nd to RIP, and far ahead of 'Deths 3rd which is 'Youthanasia'. 'Peace Sells' is an essential metal classic for every headbanger everywhere, its here where they established themselves as one of the Four Horsemen of thrash (see also Metallica, Slayer, and Anthraz). And with great songs like 'Wake Up Dead', title track, 'Good Morning/Black Friday', and 'Bad Omen' why shouldn't they deserve that title? In fact the only below acerage song on this album is 'I Aint Superstitious', which is still a fair song. The line up in Peace Sells included Dave Mustaine as vocals, lyrics, and guitar. Dave was a decent lyricist by this time, as he gradually got better as time progressed, a poor vocalist (thats okay though, as the instruments are what attracted me to Megadeth) and an AMAZING guitarist. His riffs very complex, and solos INSANE (just listen to the second solo in 'Wake Up Dead'). David Ellefson played bass and backing vocals. Ellefsons basslines, especially in 'Bad Omen', were well above the average bass player, although he would continually get much better and by the time of RIP he was the best damn metal bassist on the planet (note** - this was after the tragic passing of the great Cliff Burton [RIP]). Chris Poland played guitar and backing vocals, and he was the 2nd best guitarist that Megadeth would ever have, he is beaten only by the godly Marty Friedman. Polands solos were UNREAL during this time, only Eddie Van Halen or his comember Dave Mustaine could do better than him. Gary "Gar" Samuelson played drums, and he was also one of the better 'Deth drummers, since his bass drums and snares were used at appropriate times, making the music downright INSANE! Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland could MURDER James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (from Metallica) with ease! These guys meant business, and used many different guitar styles and went beyond the power chord unlike Metallica (which is why Master of Puppets was such a boring album). Nobody was better than Cliff Burton in terms of bass, but Ellefson proved that he wasn't far behind the late, great master. Lars Ulrich was an average drummer, thats it, and Gar could kick his ass on drums anyday. Hetfield was a much better vocalist than Dave at this time, and would be until finally in 2003 when he threw his good voice away with 'St. Anguish'. 'Deth is a far superior band to Metallica. They never made a bad album ('Risk' was poor, but not bad) while almost half of Metallicas albums were bad. They never sold out while Metallica sold out barely a decade into their musical career. They never SUED fans!
Song rating time:
Wake Up Dead - A+ (the whole song is amazing, epecially the solos)
The Conjouring - B (The verse riff made this song well above the norm, but the beginning was a little cliche)
Peace Sells - A+ (Dave Ellefson makes one of his best performances ever here, and Dave and Chris do well with solos and riffs. Plus Gars bass drum is wild here)
Devils Island - B- (I like the chorus nere, but the rest of the song seems below average for 'Deth)
Good Mourning/Black Friday - A+ (A complex balladic song erupts into a ferocious thrash metal assault, and the lyrics are insanely grotesque, but the solos are amazing in both parts)
Bad Omen - A+ (The intro is really cool, and Ellefsons crazy bassline not too far in is also a high point here. The end part Dave goes crazy with his voice and guitar [so does Chris])
I Aint Superstitious - D (This is the only below average song on the album. The lyrics are cliche, the guitars are as well, and its just too damn short)
My Last Words - A (This is a really cool song with a great instrumental beginning. The only problem here is the verse may seem cliche at times, although not really)

Overall: A+, B, A+, B-, A+/A, A+, D, A
No failing grades...thats good, I should have expected this from a great band like Megadeth.

**Note**: Master of Puppets by Metallica has two failing songs: Disposeable Heroes (almost got a D, but the lyrics didn't fit the instruments) and Damage Inc. (this one got a "Super" F).

PS: The remastering was great, I love the thought of Dave remastering an album to make it sound more crisp and clear, but the remixes at the end were kinda pointless. Sorry, but the album would still get a 5/5 without 'em.

Free Music Review: Peace sells, but who's buying? Every thrash head, thas who!
Hit: 5 Stars

When this album came out, it was quite evident Dave didnt need Lars or James (of Metallica, his former band)

It was sort of giving the finger to them actually, and divided the thrash community. Into Megadeth fans Or Metallica Fans.
Sure their was some that liked both, but i recall fights breaking out over this rivalry. Anyway Back To Megadeth.

This is Old school Thrash And to see it re-mastered like this... is amazing.. it will be heard like it was SUPPOSED to. By definition that's amazingly, even more hellish and rocking then the original production wise.

SO I have decided to review this classic thrash album, to make this review Fairplay I WILL LISTEN to EACH song before I review it.
Rather then basing it on what I can remember.

Each of these reviews are obviously my opinion, but may offer you insight into this CD.

1) Wake Up Dead (3:57) - Starts off amazingly, Chris and Dave definitely shine here.Rythm is well done, and very catchy. The main guitar solo's are amazing, and come back down to earth with some fast paced rythm afterwards charging right back into the lyrics. Then a cool down of silence, and a very cool eerie guitar part that bounces along. 5/5

2) The Conjuring (5:02) - Great guitar opening, evil sounding vocals with another chugging along rythm. First solo bounces along fast paced and leads back into fast paced lyrics. Lot's of rythm changes in this one, Never gets repetitive.A Megadeth Favourite. 5/5

3) Peace Sells (4:02) -Catchy bassline followed by a short guitar solo to enter, Very aggrivated vocals which suit it well. Cheesy lyrics, but Who cares? Lot's of guitar noodling on this one between lyrics. Great beat. This is definately a classic song. 5/5

4) Devils Island (5:05) - Very eerie guitar part at the start. Then followed by a cool bass part, launching right into lyric + rythm hell. Very pounding, perfect vocals, suiting the song perfectly. Great solos. 5/5

5) Good Mourning/Black Friday(6:39) - Good Mourning starts out extremely eerie and is AMAZING, Mustaine is great at those eerie parts on this album. After that it enters Black Friday which is extremely Thrashy, and has cool rythm...but i find a little tedious compared to the rest. 4/5

6) Bad Omen(4:03) - cool guitar opening, infact amazing. Once the lyrics start, it's average. Not a megadeth classic. But the solo is awesome. But other then the begining and the solo its average for them. 4/5

7) Aint superstitious(2:45)- cover song, very weird hearing this version. Very cool guitar noodling between lyrics, cool solo, but not that great of a song. 3.5/5

8) My Last words(4:55) - Very cool eerie begining once again. They are all over the place on this album. Great vocals, one of my fave songs on the album, if not MY FAVOURITE.Great catchy song with a solo that just bounces along. 5/5

BONUS: The Bonus songs are just mixes/demo tapes, And are weak compared to the Bonus's on other megadeth remastereds.

3/5 for the Bonus tracks. They are worth at least one listen. And were tossed in with the remastered so that's cool.
Can you put a price on Peace?
Hit: 5 Stars The inspiration on this album is more relevant today than when it was released in 1986. Mustaine is often underlooked as a songwriter and even dare I say political analyst? Anyone who is familiar with late 80's early 90's MTV will remember his views and opinions regarding anything from his hatred for Metallica to The Gulf War. As we venture towards the end of the second Iraqi crisis Dave's words ring strong in my head. Peace Sells.. But Who's Buying... Iraq? Sadly it doesn't seem to be the case. "If their's a new way, I'll be the first in line." I long for a new way myself and would be right behind him loud and proud. These lyrics are timeless. If he ever lyrically nailed a song on the head he did it with the title track on this album, and that's just one of the eight ass kicking songs.

1. "Wake up Dead" is a killer opening track. It starts out with Dave telling a story regarding an adulteress affair one might have, and the certain doom this person will encounter if he wakes his sleeping partner at 4am when he gets home. The rest of the song is an instrumental, and a damn good one at that. With tempo changes, mind blowing solos and melodic swings this track seems like 3 songs in one leading up to the "Wake Up Dead!" chant at the end.

2. "Conjuring" keeps the energy flowing with a dark almost "trippy" solo/fill intro. The tune gradually picks up speed and agressivelly comes out to being one of the better songs on the album.

3. "Peace Sells... Brilliant, Aside from the afore mentioned statement this is one of Dave's most popular songs and a live staple of a Megadeth encore. This is in my opinion Megadeth's greatest song.

4. "Devil's Island" Inspired by John Hagee's novel, this song tells an apocalyptic tale to the tune of a descending chug of riffs. Great riffage throughout, I love the intro when the power chords meet the tapping solo

5. "Good Mourning / Black Friday" - My God, where do I start with this one! The vocals on this track don't come in for about two minutes. After first hearing this you may wonder where the hell could Dave progress to after the vicious multi-part onslaught that he just treated your ears to. Of course he finds a way to do it, and do it he does indeed. This song is like a multi-part rock opera that should take an hour but is sped up to the ball busting pulse of 6 1/2 minutes. It takes several listens to fully grasp this one.

6. "Bad Omen" Similar to Conjuring (track 2) This is a dark minor scale based song that starts out dark and slow and builds to a all out thrashball. Cool song

7. "I Ain't Superstitious" Short, cool riffs, nothing to special I usually skip over this one.

8. "My Last Words" Killer, Starts out with a clean (finger-picked?) riff and busts into, yes believe it or not an all out thrash metal attack. Great way to close out an incredible album.

Megadeth rules, as for the remastering in question.. I say go for the remastered version, I've heard both, and the newer one is still incredibly raw it just has better production. Worth it for sure. Later

Free Music Review: Ahh, a fresh listen!
Hit: 5 Stars

Megadeth rocks! No ifs, buts, or ors about that one; Mustaine and the crew are metal gods. I have 5 'deth cds (namely Countdown, Youthanasia, RIP, System has Failed, and this bad boy). Like other reviewers, I believe that all these cds are different from each other and are special in their own way. I dont expect anything from each cd I get nor do I hope that its like another one; I just pop it in and listen to it with an open mind. Now a little history: My first Megadeth item that got me into them was a DVD Video Hits. It has 6 songs on it all from different cds. My favorite at the time, however, was Symphony or Destruction, so what did I get next? Thats right; the bad boy Countdown to Extinction. It blew me away and after getting 3 mor fantastic cds, I acquired Peace Sells. It drew me in from the opening lines of Wake up Dead, and didnt let go. The solos are seriously some of the best I've by Megadeth and other bands. Mustaine's voice is in perfect form and the crunching riffs never get better than these. I didnt think Megadeth could do better than RIP; I thought wrong!!

Wake up Dead: Delicious song! Starts off with a quickly little bass line, a verse from Dave, and after that its riff after changing riff, shredding solos, and glory abounding. Not very many words, but who cares, its the music anyway, right? 9.5/10

Conjuring: To not get myself wrong, I love this song. Every riff, time change, and verse/chorus is a masterpiece. I will say this, however. Dave's voice is sort of morphed on the first verse. It does sound sort of cool for an intro, but then as you will hear, his voice is still morphed through the whole song! I likes the bonus track of this song better for that reason only. Dont get me wrong, still a 9.5 star song!

Peace Sells: What can be said about this gem that hasnt been said; its one of Megadeth's anthems and its a masterpiece. 10/10

Devil's Island: An underated song, why? From the opening riffs to the chorus to the thrash verses, to the amazing speed solos, this song is a treasure. Definetly a good one. 9/10

Good Mourning/Black Friday: The acoustic intro is amazing and the first verse starts off the song in a darker mood. Then with a sudden time change, and little drum fill the song races to be one of Megadeth's faster thrash songs. Its definetly a top 10/10

Bad Omen: I love the guitar at the beginning! The lyrics, if you read them, are pretty sweet too. The bass also has a complex part. Another not-to-be-missed gem! 9/10

I Ain't Superstitious: This cover song is pretty decent. Its the worst song on the album in my opinion but its not a bad one. It doenst really fit with the format of the album, which is good because it gives the listener a variety but it doesnt really sound like a song Megadeth would cover! Not bad; the solos were created by Poland and Mustaine and they are of course sweet. 8/10

My Last Words: The music on this song fit the most together. I love how the bass comes in with a little riff. A great song with a sweet finale. Another Megadeth gem! 9/10

Free Music Review: Wait a sec, I haven't reviewed ANY Megadeth albums?
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow I can't believe this is the first Megadeth album I'm reviewing and I've been on Amazon since early October and these guys are definitely in my top 10 metal bands, coming in at maybe around number 7 or so. Anyway so I've been going through a lot of BS lately so I haven't been able to write anything lately, sorry folks but don't worry I'M HERE!

1986 was a KILLER year for metal, I mean not only did we get Master of Puppets and Reign in Blood, we also got Pleasure to Kill (another fave of mine), Somewhere In Time, Darkness Descends (insane thrash), and this badass album.

Enough chit-chat let's just cut to the chase with the actual tunes. Wake Up Dead is a sweet opener with some killer bass and comical lyrics that I can relate to, ya know, coming home late wasted, who hasn't done that? The Conjuring is another Megadeth classic where Dave starts to go into the occult theme that he further goes into on RIP and personally I dig it. The title track is perhaps the best Megadeth song ever, seriously, what metalhead DOESNT know the lyrics to this beast? They're quite genius in their simplicity if you ask me since they have to do with everyday life. Then comes the underrated Devil's Island with awesome shout-along vocals and thrash metal galloping guitars, very (dare I say) catchy? Yeah I said it.

The next two songs are probably my least favorite, especially Bad Omen, yeah it's fast but that doesn't necessarily mean it's automatically great, it's just a tad boring and repetitive compared to the rest of the album. Well at least Good Mourning has the cool acoustic beginning that transforms very smoothly into a solid thrasher.

Oh boy then we have perhaps the first Megadeth cover song, Willie Dixon's "I Ain't Superstitious" which sometimes get some flak being one of Megadeth's weirdest songs but I think it gives the album a nice touch, some nice added flavor to the mix. I personally think Dave deserves some more credit in general for his covers, especially Anarchy in the UK on So far so good. The last song is a personal fave of mine and quite underrated as well. This one starts out with electric and acoustics, then goes all-out speed and the rest of the way is just a killer ride up and down and around through Thrashville, VERY NICE!

Once again I'm not going to go into nitty-gritty specifics on the music because frankly that's just monotonous and annoying, annoying for me to write and a pain for you to read about it. All you need to know is that the line-up is solid and has Dave Mustaine in it...nuff said. This album put them on the map and for good reason too.

I know Dave was always jealous of Metallica but I see no reason for this after listening to an album like this. Remember Dave did get the last laugh because he and Megadeth are STILL METAL! No selling out here! Ok I think I've said what needs to be said, I'm keeping it simple today folks. PEACE.
