Free Music Review: Best Megadeth CD
Hit: 5 Stars

In my mind, this will always be the best Megadeth CD. I know that Megadeth had bigger commercial successes but to me...this is their finest hour. This album has Chris Poland on guitar and in my mind, this is the best Megadeth lineup. Poland's playing on this album is incredible. I love Marty Friedman and Rust In Peace is a favorite too but for me Megadeth's "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying" with Chris Poland is and always will be the quintessential Megadeth CD. I don't have the one with the remixes but I can see myself checking it out if I wear out this CD. Hell, this is such a great metal CD I might buy it again with the remixes for the hell of it. I'm sure there aren't a lot of people familiar with Chris Poland but he is an incredible guitar player. I recommend checking out his Return to Metropolis CD too.

I'd say that the songs Wake up Dead, Peace Sells, Black Friday and My Last Words are my favorite tracks. How could you not like a song like Black Friday that starts out with this lyrical gem:

"Killer, intruder, homicidal man.
If you see me coming,
Run fast as you can.
A blood thirsty demon
Who's stalking the street
I hack up my victims
Like pieces of meat."

Yes sir, it don't get any better then that there!!! And belive me...the lyrics just keep getting better...but check it out for yourself. LOL

Wake Up Dead...great opening track...I love it when Dave sounds really pissed off.
The Conjuring...good track...not my favorite but still a good listen.
Peace Sells...the most known track on this album...I love the lead fills by Chris on this one.
Devils Island...great song.
Good Mourning/Black Friday...one of my personal favorites on this CD...I memorized the lyrics when I was younger.
Bad Omen...this song isn't among my fav's but it still kick azz.
I Ain't Superstitious...it's a old blues cover song but nothing like the original done by I think Howling Wolf...LOL, I thought this one worked great.
My Last Words...great lyrics about playing Russian Roulette...OK, I'm twisted but this CD isn't for the Britney Spears crowd.

This is a must own if you like Megadeth. It's a hungry and pissed off Dave Mustaine. It's a great guitarist like Chris Poland on top of his game. The lyrics are great. The playing by the band is great. Get this CD !!!

Free Music Review: Megadeths finest hour!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is when metal was metal. Now, though I'm 20 , I never took the chance to listen to Megadeth until last year, so I had to get all the remasters. As far as sound production goes, Mustaine redid it with 24 bit sound remastering, and it sounds incredible. Most of the overly reverbs have been removed creating a more cleaner and modern sound. You can't look at the cover of this album and not be amazed, I love the cover ofit, but I love the content even more.

Wake Up Dead- basically an instrumental, this song totally slashes away and then goes into a little jazzy solo by poland that totally gives it closure and originality- 5 stars

The Conjuring- one of the evil songs of the album, it delves into the black arts, it's extremely heavy, and Dave's spoken into is totally wicked- 5 stars

Peace Sells- ahh, the infamous bass intro- this is one of their most reknowned songs, and rightfully so. despite the fact that it has a very simple riff structure, this song rocks you to hell in only a few mintues, and Chris Polands solos are brilliant- 5 stars

Devil's Island- the intro to this is freaking awesome- 5 stars

Good Mourning Black Friday- this is another evil song- it's also the first of their 2 parter songs that would follow in records later- 4.5 stars

Bad Omen- a lot of people tend to generally feel less enthusiastic about this song, but it's really dark and catchy- 4.5 stars

I ain't superstitious- It's just a silly song that is aimed at showing Polands ability to use his jazz guitar background, and he does it well. 3.5 stars

My Last Words- second weakest track on the album after superstitious. Mustaine's vocals are a little muffled and hard to understand- some parts remind me of looking down the cross- 4 stars

This is one of my first Megadeth albums, and it is surely one of their best. There are plenty of cool retro photos of the band and a history lesson written by Mustaine in the form of liner notes to really help new fans, and even older fans to realize what they have done throughout the last 20+ years. DOn't miss this metal classic!!!!! THere are also other versions of some of the songs here, mostly with the reverb in place, but you probably won't ever listen to them. Why would you when the remastered versions sound fantastic

Free Music Review: Is there a better thrash album?
Hit: 5 Stars

A lot of people give Slayer's Reign in Blood more credibility than it deserves. Of course I'm not forgetting the impact that record had on the metal scene, and it was definitely one of the most influential albums of all time, no doubt, but when compared to this gem, it seems like just a generic thrash record, to me anyway.

I should note that while I love thrash, it doesn't come anywhere close to being my favorite genre. I do enjoy the brutal whiplash of Slayer and Sepultura, as well as the melodic thrash/speed combo of Nevermore, and also the 90's neo-thrash of Pantera and Machine Head - but I don't think any of those bands could top this (except for maybe Nevermore who truly are an amazing band). While those bands were writing songs about Hell and Satan (well, Slayer anyways), Megadeth tackled the more realistic issues of drugs, sex and politics (putting emphasis on that last one). Peace Sells... was their 2nd full-length record (first on Capitol) and the one that propelled Megadeth into metal stardom. It was here that they released one of their biggest hits, "Peace Sells", my favorite Megadeth song by far. Sure, there were great songs like "Hangar 18" and "Symphony of Destruction" in later years - but none of which had such energy and honesty as this thrasher. Offering such memorable lyrics as "when there's a new way/I'll be the first in line/but it better work this time" this was probably the catchiest offering of the album. Of course, who could forget the other single, "Wake Up Dead" - a song which offered a decadent solo halfway through that lasted about a minute. And of course we have the faster-paced "Devil's Island" and "My Last Words" - two of the best Megadeth songs in my opinion.

In reality, there's not much to complain about here. The remastered version includes the original mixes of all the songs before they were re-recorded for the Capitol version in 1986 - displaying a few differences from those of the final version. This extends the album length, which was a bit short, and also provides a better sound. It isn't worth buying if you have the original, obviously, but it's nice to have. All in all, I think Dave and the guys really had something special with this gem. A metal milestone that raised the bar for quality thrash.

10/10

Free Music Review: My favorite Megadeth album
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the album that put megadeth "on the map", so to speak. They made some great videos (Wake up dead, Peace sells) and signed with Capitol Records. This is also the final album with the "Mustaine/Ellefson/Samuelson/Poland" lineup.

Wake up dead: 10/10
My favorite song on the album. It includes some great guitar riffs and solos, and just has a cool mood overall.

The Conjuring: 9/10
Again, great guitar work from Mustaine and Poland. Not as good as the songs it falls between though.

Peace sells: 10/10
This is one of Megadeths biggest songs. the opening bass riff is just a classic, and it was played on the MTV music news segments for years. The lyrics to this one are great, too.

Devil's Island: 10/10
An awesome song, with a catchy chorus. It also has a cool guitar solo. One of the best on the record.

Good Mourning: 5/5
This is the softer, somewhat acoustic intro to the next song, which is...

Black Friday: 4/5
After the slow Good Mourning half, the song kicks into high gear and turns into a very thrashy number.

Bad Omen: 9/10
Starts out with another slower paced intro, then it turns into an almost funk-thrash song. Very interesting.

I ain't superstious: 10/10
This one is a blues cover. Dave made some lyrical changes to this one, and gave it a more thrash feel. One of my favorites on the album.

My Last Words: 10/10
Starts off with yet another acoustic intro, then it turns into another fast-paced metal classic. A great way to end the album.

Total: 77/80, 5 stars

BONUS TRACKS:
The bonus tracks are just different mixesof Wake up dead, Conjuring, Peace sells, and Good Mourning/Black Friday. They are much more raw and include more reverb and looser sounding drums. I would have rather seen demos, but this is better than nothing!

This version is the Newly Remixed/Remastered version, personally remixed by Dave Mustaine. It sounds, obviously, much better than the original, and it includes new artwork and liner notes from dave himself. Be sure to pick this up, even if you have the original!

Free Music Review: Well Done
Hit: 5 Stars

To me "Peace Sells" is one of the three classic Megadeth albums including: "Rust In Peace", and "Countdown". I've always had a fondness for this album but, until recently I never really appreciated "Peace Sells" until I heard this remixed and remastered version. I do own the other two albums remixed and original "Rust In Peace" and "Countdown". I did not like the "Countdown" remixes, the sampled snare drum killed it, in my opinion the original mixes were fine. I was hesitant to give this remixed album a chance. But after hearing previews of "Peace Sells" on amazon I was hooked. It's nice to be able to hear some of the subtleties that were lost in the original mix due to inferior technology and older mixing methods.

However great it is to hear the extra bits here and there that were previously buried in the original mix, there are a few times that Dave embellished the original tracks too much. For example on "The Conjuring" the last vocal line last a few beats to long, on "Wake Up Dead" the guitar solo holds the last note too long. During "Peace Sells" I could hear some heavy gating on the guitar tracks. At the same time, these are very trivial discrepancies and I must say that the drums and the bass have a much fuller, present, and punchier sound, while the guitars got an upgrade as well with a much more dynamic sound. All in all each instrument owns a specific stake in the frequency spectrum producing a much tighter, brighter, and bigger sound.

The tracks that stick out to me as sounding better are "Peace Sells", "Good Morning/Black Friday", "Bad Omen", "I Ain't Superstitious", and "My Last Words".

I think it's cool that Dave went back not to just remaster the original albums, like many lazy artists and cheap labels often do to generate new profit, but also tediously remixed them too. Though I may disagree with a small percentage of his decisions at the mixing console overall I am very impressed and pleased with how much better He made this album sound. I know some of you may disagree and that's fine but for me it's nice to re-experience this classic album mixed through today's superior studio technology.
