Free Music Notes for The System Has FailedFree Music Review: Megadeth Rocks the World Again! Hit: 5 Stars
Once again, Megadeth- at least frontman Dave Mustaine, who is undeniably the driving force ebhind the band- has unleashed a powerful, heavy-hitting album reminiscent of earlier albums, "Peace Sells...." and "Rust in Peace". Although lacking bassist, Ellefson- an old-time member, Chris Poland joins dave in some of Megadeth's most blistering guitar work to date!
Setting up the album is "Blackmail the Universe" - a lyrical account of politics & annihilism with a driving beat, many tempo changes & classic Megadeth rhythms. "Die Dead Enough" and "Kick the Chair" are both solid Megadeth songs with tight vocals & musical arrangements. "The Scorpion", a personal favorite of mine, is one of the best on the album- a powerful melody and classic lyricism ala Dave! "Tears in a Vial" is easily the most melodic offering on the CD- and while some hard-core fans may not consider it as highly as other songs on the CD, I'd caution them to listen again. It's one that grows on you! "Back in the Day" betrays the early thrash roots with some of the fastest guitar playing in evidence. "Something That I'm Not" is a sly tune with a pounding and intoxicating beat- another personal favorite. This song seems to wrap around your brain and grip it at those odd hours of the night~ "Truth Be Told", an early fan favorite, with intricate guitar leads & a great hook, is classic Megadeth. "Of Mice and Men" is another infectious tune- with a great drumming, rhythm work and Mustaine's vocals are simply superb! This song has easily become my favorite- with interesting little leads that accentuate the powerful yet haunting melody. "Shadow of Deth"- written by some guy named "David * ;-) and accompanied by some ominous, moody guitar work is a nice segueway into "My Kingdom"- a brooding return to the roots of Megadeth.Altogether- a must-have for any self-respecting Deth-Head~
And- buy it with the uncensored cover art- it's worth the money in & of itself!
Free Music Review: Best Album of 2004!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Finally, some good real metal music this year!! Dave Mustaine returns triumphantly with his band Megadeth to release The System has Failed. After recovering from an accident that the doctors told him that he would never play the guitar again, Mustaine proves them wrong and puts out a masterpiece of true heavy metal music.
The CD starts strong, angry, & aggressive and doesn't let up until the last song is finished. Anyone who thought that Metallica's load of crap called St. Anger was real heavy metal should be forced to listen to this CD over and over again while getting the you know what knocked out of him in a mosh pit full of real heavy metal fans.
I saw Megadeth on Halloween night on the Blackmail the Universe tour, and had to be one of the best performances of the year. During the show, when he was introducing the song "Something That I'm Not," he got a jab in on Metllica explaining that one of the reasons that Exodus was on the road with them is because he never forgot where he came from. Boy isn't that the truth. I saw some T-shirts in the audience that said, "Dave Mustaine for President," and I thought to myself, "Now that would be a real President for the people!"
The highlights of the CD for me were, "Blackmail the Universe," "Die Dead Enough," "Kick the Chair," "The Scorpion," "Back in the Day," "Something That I'm Not," and "Truth Be Told." This CD has my vote for Best Album of 2004. In my opinion, no one else has even come close to rivaling Megadeth for this honor.
Bottom Line: If you want real in your face kick-ass metal music, buy this CD and the new Exodus CD(I can't for the life of me remember the name off hand). If you want dull, boring, sold out to the trappings of Pop Mucus (No, that's not a typo) then buy St. Anger, or anything else from any other loser Snue Metal Bands like Limp Bizkit, Likin Park, or Papa Roach. Hasta!!
Free Music Review: Getting Better With Each Release - Too Bad It's Their Last Hit: 5 Stars
It's a sad day for American Metal for the end of the greatest metal legends in history - the one and only Megadeth. However, what a way to exit the stage!! TSHF is by far the best album Mustaine and Company have released in years. Not to rule out any of their other albums, but there were a few recent releases that were a tad... "un"Megadeth. I was first introduced to Megadeth when I was 16. 20 years later.... I am still banging my head and whipping my neck to Dave and his unique style. Living here in Phoenix, AZ - I've had a chance to attend 6 of Megadeth's concerts including the climactic Rude Awakenings concert where they recorded the live CD and DVD. (Wow!! What a RUSH that was!! - and I realized that I aint as young as I used to be!!)
To honor Megadeth for their excellent music over the many years, I have passed on their legacy of kick-ass music to my 2 sons (ages 8 & 6) and they think Megadeth is best band on the planet. They bang and neck whip right along with me. (What a proud dad I am!!)
Other reviews of this album have mentioned not comparing it to any other album - and they are quite right. This album is similar to Rust, but oh so different and much more unique. The first time you listen to it will not truly impact you - however, after 2 or 3 careful listenings, this album will grab you by the music soul and NOT LET YOU GO! I've had this album for all of 2 months and it grows on me more and more with each passing day. Expect the same thing to happen to you if you truly admire Dave's one-of-a-kind style and searing riffs.
Megadeth is back with an awesome vengeance... very sad it marks an end to one of the greatest musical era's the world of TRUE Heavy Metal will ever see.
To you, Dave and Company.... I tip my (Megadeth) hat and toast you for the excellent times and the many, many memories.
Free Music Review: If You Only Buy One Metal Album This Year, This Is It. Hit: 5 Stars
After fearing that MegaDeth was just a fond memory of earlier, simpler, pre-911 times, Megadeth roars back to smack you in head. Or is that the cerebral cortex?
It took me two listens thru to understand that something truly remarkable had happened here. The music is head-bangingly punishing, coming at you with a heavy base and drum beat that is both classic Megadeth but refreshingly vibrant. The guitar solos are solid and not particularly risk-taking, but done with a passion and technical expertise that leaves you breathless. If this had been a strictly instrumental album, it would have been well worth the money.
Yet for all this, what impressed me most was the wide-ranging lyrical inspiration. There are true mythic themes at work here.
Track 1, "Blackmail The Universe", is an obvious reference to current events and sets the tone for the album.
Track 5, "Tears In A Vial", was striking because it was poignant without losing the harder effects of the album as a whole.
Track 11, "Shadow of Deth", was a nice touch that involves both a latin prayerful pleading for aid and a passage from the bible.
My favorite, however, was track 4, "Scorpion". This track was taken from a native american myth that tells us that we are all slaves to our nature. A scorpion must sting because that is what a scorpion does, even if it is contrary to the scorpions best interests. The track seems to be telling us that we are probably all doomed to be what we are - fatally flawed human beings. It is the musical equivalent of a train wreck - terrible to watch, but we are powerless to turn away from the revelation of our own wickedness. Delicious!
Buy this album and hang on for the ride. You'll be listening to it over and over agin.
Free Music Review: Seems like Risk and TWNAH didnt even happen. Hit: 5 Stars
To me, it seems like this album was released right after cryptic writings. its absolutly fantastic. great guitar riffs, solos all over the place, double bass, and incredible lyrics. i love metallica, but i think that TSHF tops st. anger. let me remind you that this is not a rust in peace 2, and there will never be a rust in peace 2, but if you were disappointed by "the world needs a hero", this one will not let you down. heres a song by song review:
