Free Music Review: Dave Mustaine - Alive, Well, and Angry Again!
Hit: 5 Stars

Dave Mustaine returns with a new Megadeth disc, something many fans thought they'd never see after he "cut the cord" a couple years ago. Thankfully, Dave is alive, well and angry again! "The System Has Failed" picks up in many ways where we were left off when Dave was so rudely interrupted: on tour supporting "The World Needs a Hero". Like the aforementioned "Hero" LP, "System" rocks with Dave's bristling mix of guitars, blood-in-his-mouth lyrics and voice intercuts about war and dark times to come. Nix that last part - the dark times are HERE! The CD opens with a blistering "Blackmail the Universe", then kicks into the disc's best tune: "Die Dead Enough", a song with lyrics that may be taken as both personal declaration and general tribute to anyone who's been kicked hard but refused to give in. "Kick the Chair" offers Dave's view of our state of justice, and "Scorpion" (perhaps the record's 2nd best tune) a damning view of human kind overall. Best of all, like nearly all the tunes on this CD, they all rock! That's why Megadeth fans love Dave and his cohorts so. The LP winds into its middle with an excellent tune, "Back in the Day", in which Dave sloughs off anyone who fails to "get it", noting they weren't likely there anyway when the experiences that shaped him occurred. Still, no compromises; this deeply personal album winds up with three more revealing songs: "Of Mice and Men", "Shadow of Deth", and "My Kingdom Come", wherein Dave laments his past mistakes, recognizes the source of his strength and redemption, and steels himself for the struggles ahead - pasts and futures to which lots of fans and observers can relate, as evidenced by the giant sales of this CD. But enough of the head trip; this album rocks!!! - and that's all you need.

Free Music Review: Dave Mustaine is Forgiven!
Hit: 5 Stars

After hearing Megadeth's new album 'The System has Failed' I have now totally forgiven Dave for the last 2 poor albums. Finally Megadeth is back to playing what they are thrash metal! No this is not the all out rip fest that RIP was but thrash elements have returned to the music which can be best described as a mix between RIP/CTE/YOUTH/and CW with a modern and heavy production.

The songs sound fresh and inspired unlike the last few outputs. The trade off soloing is also brought back in this album as Mustaine utilizes himself along with former axemen Chris Poland for some really great solos that remind me of the glory days. It's also refreshing to hear Dave's heart is totally back into metal as proven by the song 'Back in the Day' a hail to metal anthem as the lyrics suggest....'Metal's king back then and still is to this day'. Why didn't Mustaine remember that line while writing Risk and to a lesser extent TWNAH?

Ok, bottom line is this, I know the music biz can be cut throat. Labels and other band mates can pressure you into doing things against your will and cloud your vision. I have read the Guitar article and various other interviews where Mustaine states his case on what happened. Sounds like Marty while being a great guitar player was not into metal anymore. He has done the right thing by coming out and telling the fans the truth and the reasons for Megadeth becoming a not so heavy band up until this triumphant comeback album. But ultimately Megadeth is Dave's band and he should have put his foot down and not let that happen. That being said, I can forgive Mustaine and I commend him for clearing the air and delivering on a great new Megadeth album!

MEGADETH IS BACK, now please stay that way!

Free Music Review: Almost perfect! A must buy!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Last I heard, Megadeth was kaput due to Mustaine having a debilitating disease. I was surprised to see this release on the shelves, and wasn't even sure if Mustaine was part of the project. Of course I can't wait and find out more before purchasing and this usually burns me in the end; but not this time.

This is the best metal CD I've heard in years. The songs are ferocious and intense but more importantly, they are well crafted. The guitar work is amazing, from both a technical and emotional base. I imagine that has much to do with bringing Chris Poland back into the fold. The guitar just has that familiar quality of classic Megadeth while sounding fresh. The songs are well written, for the most part, great lyrics. The production is crisp, nothing sounds muddled or tuned down. This baby sounds good loud, perfect for some head banging and air guitar playing.

"Scorpion" or "tears in a vial" or "back in the day" are probably my favorite tracks but all the tracks are very strong and I think it is a matter of personal preference as to which is best.

One thing I personally hate and it is not unique to Megadeth or this album is the use "talking" inserted in songs. Scorpion is one of my fav tracks but the use of "news reports" is annoying to me. As an example, the tune is cranking and all of a sudden you here a newscaster talking, "So and so was arrested today in Columbia with Heroin, Cocaine and Hashish." Sound effects like that or sounds of a mob or machinery or a bomb etc. are fine to a point but usually distract me. You will find that in a few places on this CD. Maybe it will enhance your listening pleasure, but for me it detracts from the wonderfully crafted songs.

Free Music Review: A surprise
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard that Megadeth was putting out one final album due to contract obligations I was ecstatic. Of course I was also worried that since it was just to fulfill a contract that it would be quickly slapped together and mostly just filler. Thankfully, I was wrong. This is one of Megadeth's finest works. Good enough to get me excited about metal again, which hadn't been done in years.
First off, when you first pick up the album you notice how politically charged the title and cover art is. Surprisingly I never realized how many political messages were in the lyrics of Megadeth's music. Looking back, Rust in Peace (Megadeth's 1990 release) had a very political message as well. The System has Failed addresses the less than perfect behavior to come out of the government over the past 12 years on the cover. Songs such as "Blackmail the Universe" encourage war against those who threaten the US and our safety, while "Kick the Chair" denounces the current legal system in the United States through lyrics such as, "Justice means nothing today, now that the jury's for sale. Guilty or not, the verdicts a lie."
Not only is The System has Failed full of political messages, but it is a triumphant return to the chugging riffs and speedy playing that made Megadeth famous in the first place. The music isn't as fast as it once was, and you can't expect it to be. After all, these guys are getting into their late 30's/early 40's. However, the music is still a breath of fresh air in today's nu-metal market but still remains familiar enough to not alienate long time fans.
Top 4 Tracks:
1. "Kick the Chair"
2. "Die Dead Enough"
3. "Back in the Day"
4. "Blackmail the Universe"

Free Music Review: Still alive And well?
Hit: 5 Stars

INTRO:Megadeth has been known for their trash metal style and over the top music that has no limit.Since a couple of years they seem like they lost their edge. The ones who burried them too early will be surprised by this album it goes back to what they were supposed to be its their best album since-(you pick an album)and unfortunatly its their last album but what an album!Great songs, lirics, solos Megadeth rules!

REWIEW:I love this album!Songs like `blackmail the universe`are real good especially `Kick the chair`with multiples solos, now that is cool. After albums like `Risk`,`The world needs a hero` they finaly recorded something thats worth it.Chris Poland even plays on this record and he`s great! If you are or ever were a Megadeth fan i strongly recomend this album. This album being their last, solidified Megadeth`s reputation.

2004 IN REWIEW:The year 2004 was one of Megadeth`s busiest years they recorded this album`The system has failed`and Dave Mustaine remastered the Megadeth albums and they would soon go on tour. Now Megadeth retired from the music scene but is there a chance they will come back?I dont know but im sure they will die dead enough. The album was supposed to Mustaine`s solo album but the record company forced him to make it Megadeth.Anyway its a great album.

Like that other rewiewer said is the first trash metal album in the 21st century and there might never be another one,and if you dont think its trash metal then its probably the closest we will get.And in comparison to Metalica`s last album i can say there are no comparisons Megadeth won.

OVERRAL:Megadeth did a great album and proved that they still had something left in the tank.Highly recomended!
