Free Music Review: Simply Melissa
Hit: 5 Stars

Well let me start off by saying this album is absolutely incredible it is filled with very deep emotions that will truly touch your heart if you are a true Melissa fan than you know that she is very inspirational and that is what this CD is I was truly moved when I heard #16 and I think this is one of her best CD's to date

Free Music Review: I'd give it 6
Hit: 5 Stars

I cannot believe the critics who don't like this album!!! I can't stop playing it/humming along/singing it. I e-mailed the link to STAR 103s live in studio performance to our priest, so she could see "Kingdom of Heaven". I think it's the best song she's ever written. Except maybe Unexpected Rain" or "I've loved you before". I love the way she takes you from wild and irresponsible youth to solemn introspection to rage over the idiocy of the powers that are running this country and our world into the ground.
I could so relate to so many of the songs, and can't find a bad song on it. I have most of her CDs but the only ones I ever play are the first album and
Yes I am. She's kind of like Joni Mitchell in that she wears her heart on her sleeve, bares her guts to the world, and pisses people off if she changes a thing. So what if some of the sounds sound alike? Isn't that what defines an artist's style? Never seemed to have hurt John Fogarty (IMO every one of his songs sounds exactly alike).
Melissa sings her heart out, and I am happy to say that I know she is singing to me and a whole lot of other people.

Free Music Review: Good Stuff
Hit: 4 Stars

First Listen: I listened to this album from start to finish, late at night (had to keep the volume down - neighbor's). It wasn't bad, but it didn't bowl me over like I had hoped.

Second Listen: Early evening, start to finish and to heck with the neighbor's. I cranked it up and just let myself drown in the music. I absolutely loved it!!

Don't ask... I have no idea what the difference really was. Maybe I was in a less tired and better listening mood that second time, but I am so very glad that I gave it a second listen (it helps to also go into it with an open mind). Some of those songs had me crying as I was able to relate so well, and very deeply on at least a couple of them.

It's a bit different from her stereotypical stuff, but different is often times good and in this case, it's good stuff.

Quick comment here: I laughed with the Sha na na part in the Message To Myself... reminded me of Partridge Family and just sits so funny with me!!

Free Music Review: Best album since "SKIN" --- great improvement over "LUCKY"
Hit: 3 Stars

Melissa has always thrived on the pain and pains of life, and THE AWAKENING gives her much to deal with.

After the disappointing sales and songs on LUCKY, she's made a real effort to step up the pace and we're rewarded with a few gems:

CALIFORNIA with the great/honest refrain "I am ALMOST free..."

AN UNEXPECTED RAIN which deals on the regrets of her early,"sleep around" life

MAP OF THE STARS which is sort of her version of the Eagle's NEW KID IN TOWN

THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and IMAGINE THAT are her responses to the war in Iraq and the current political climate

The most "pop friendly/memorable" songs are MESSAGE TO MYSELF and THREESOME, sure to be concert favorites.

She still struggles with writing hooks and/or memorable melodies so WHAT HAPPENS TOMORROW, THE UNIVERSE LISTENED, OPEN YOUR MIND, HEROES AND FRIENDS, and I'VE LOVED YOU BEFORE all sound about the same.

She has four short tracks GOD IS IN THE PEOPLE, ALL THERE IS, ALL WE CAN REALLY DO and A SIMPLE LOVE which are only a couple minutes each. Nice, but not really "songs."

So you're left with a CD of 16 tracks. Cut the four short songs and you have 12, cut the five "sound alike" songs and you're down to seven tracks and of those seven, you have a couple pop gems and five more low-key songs that hearken back to her early albums.

SKIN remains her "best" and most accessible album with most of the songs having strong hooks and memorable melodies.

Special mention must be made to the guitar playing of Philip Sayce--he really contributes some "stinging" guitar tabs and I wish he was heard more on the album.

Finally, Melissa continues to seek out a spiritual reality in her life, one that began with SKIN. So this CD contains much about her regret over previous "bad behavior" and it's nice to see an artist address where she was and where she wants to be.

She's "not free yet" but at least she's looking.

Free Music Review: This woman is incredibly talented
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow! Fabulous sound quality. Soulful songwriting. Excellent vocals and musical performances. I hope all other recording artists listen to this CD and learn what a great CD should sound like. (Hear that Bruce?) I sure hope her health problems are at an end. I hope to keep hearing her work for a long time to come. Thanks for the great effort, Melissa!
