Free Music Review: heavy sludge punk

The Melvins started in 1983 and have been consistantly releasing albums since '86. From out of a typical American hardcore punk sound they invented their own style of heavy sludge rock with unusual rhythms changes and song structures. The Melvins have experimented with their sound so much even die hard fans don't have a clue to expect from each album. If you don't own any Melvins album Bullhead is the one to start with. If you're already into the band you need to own this one. Released in 1991, Bullhead is not a huge departure from Gluey Porch Treatments or Ozma. The main difference is that now the songs are more focused. Songs: BORIS- the same riff over and over for nearly 9 minutes with pounding drums accenting every note with the guitar tuned down really low. This is music to get stoned and watch a spider slowly crawl on the ceiling to. A sludge masterpeice. The band, Boris is named after this song. ANACONDA- this song has a weird groove to it and lots of bendy notes and guitar slides. Punk on downers? I can't tell what the lyrics are but the song is somehow catchy. LIGATURE- jerky rhythms played heavy and slow (actually kinda midtempo Black Sabbathy). Ends with a drum solo played over feedback. ITS SHOVED- waaay different from the rest of the album. An upbeat rocker with almost a funk beat. The standout track along with Boris. ZODIAC- punk all over the guitar neck. The song morphs into another headbangin weird rhythm. Definetly Melvins, noone else could right a song like this. It was interesting to hear Napalm Death-clones, Brutal Truth cover this years later. IF I HAD AN EXORCISM- sounds like an exorcism complete with inaudible mumbling and groanings ending with a high e chord played over and over as the bass and drums lay out a steady rhythm and King Buzz exorcises them demons out. Strange song, can't get enough. YOUR BLESSENED- the Melvins' hit breakthrough single right behind "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with the feedback and heavily bended bar chords that MTV audiences just loved! Ha! Just yankin your colon. Ends with lots of feedback and pounding drums while echoey vocals proclaim something about "mans only distant relative" before going back into the heavy guitars and jerky rhythm. COW- demonic sounding metal and some more strange mumbling vocals like on Exorcism. Ends with feedback fading out and the drums continue on their own till the end of the album and that's it. I cannot recomend this album enough! Any self respecting punk rock, metalhead, weird stoner, noise rocker, prentious record collector, and their grandma should own this. If you like the Melvins this is essential. If you're interested this is a good place to start. The Melvins are a strange band and might have to grow on you but if you start getting into it, its more addictive than heroin and you'll want every album. However, despite what people write on the internets and despite how they were Kurt Cobain's musical heroes and friends: I don't think that a typical Nirvana fan would like this. If you like early Swans, Rollins-era Black Flag, St Vitus, Flipper, Sex Pistols, Butthole Surfers, and more experimental punk or heavy rock like Black Sabbath or Blue Cheer you'll dig the Melvins. They were a bigger influence the sound of Sunn 0)), Earth, Boris, and bands like that than the whole 90s grunge thing. Nirvana were poppy enough to appeal to mainstream. Melvins are too weird and idiosyncratic for that audience. However, maybe the Melvins will drag you into their strange world and you'll begin discovering underground music. If so I suggest The Stooges, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Butthole Surfers, MDC, Dead Milkmen, JFA, Ween, Nomeansno, The Dicks, and Flipper. Then find out their influences from back in the day. There are several great newer bands too, like AIDS Wolf and Arab On Radar. BUY BULLHEAD!!!!!
