Free Music Notes for Memoirs of a Geisha AlbumFree Music Review: Who in the world is Elisabeth Vincentelli? Hit: 4 StarsAnd why is she writing about someone she knows nothing about? First of all you don't have to have an Asian composer to score an Asian-themed film. I love Dun and Hasaishi, but I'll digress from this gripe because it's so ridiculous. Second of all, Williams didn't "win" the assignment. When John Williams agress to score your film you don't saying anything other than "Thank you, Mr. Williams". No doubt it was Spielberg's early decision to direct the film that led John Williams to score it. When Spielberg decided to leave the directing and just produce, Williams respectably stayed on to score.
The next ridiculous statement: "Left the bombast at home". Ok, so you're not familiar with the works of John Williams. That's OK. Just say so. You think because you've heard Star Wars and Jurassic Park that you know his music? You don't have to look very hard to realize that Williams is as affluent in crafting the most delicate musical textures as evident in this very John Willaims-esque score.
John Williams is a master of his craft. And one of the few. Well into the twilight of his career he continues to redefine the art. "A.I.", "Minority Report", and espeically "Catch Me If You Can" all carved new niches in the film scoring tree. "Memoirs of a Geisha" continues this tend. Somebody this far into their career should not be reinnovating the industry with each new score. But yet, Williams has been doing this with his last several years of work. "Memoirs" is poetically rich and inspiring. Crafted by somebody who clearly undestands the power of film and the art of storytelling. I want badly to let Williams go and let some of the younger composers take the mantle. But all of them are way far off from equalling this seasoned master. So it looks like Williams will continue his reign.
