Free Music Review: Stunning! Best Mendelssohn and Shostakovich out there!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard this CD, I was just stunned. I just sat there wondering how anyone could possibly be that good. Not only does Hahn play the Mendelssohn with breakneck speed that fills the music as well as the listener with amazing amounts of energy. Then, the Shostakovich takes all that energy and molds it into this awe. I have heard that Hilary's Shostakovich interpretation was slightly shallow, lacking the depression and morbidity that Shostakovich intended for the concerto. I must say that someone as kind and sweet as Hilary (I have met her personally) is incapable of interpreting anything morbidly; rather her interpretation is this chilling, haunting clarity and soul that just makes you shiver and turn up your termostate; Her interpretation is ice cold. Obviously, ice cold may not sound good. But you must bear in mind that this is not a genial, melodic German concerto such as the Bruch. "Ice cold" works perfectly for this concerto. I have never liked contemporary works or any of the pre-contemporary composers such as Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Khatchiturian, and others, yet Hilary Hahn's soulful playing has now four times squashed those biases; with her Barber, Meyer, Stravinsky, and now the Shostakovich violin concerto. This is the best Shostakovich I have heard; usually, it is over-interpreted and mutated; Hilary Hahn just frezzes it solid.
Back the Mendelssohn. The gem of the violin concertos, you must get it perfect, less your fans get stuck with one of the core concertos poorly recorded, and waiting ten years for it to be rerecorded and released. I was very nervous when first listening to it, but with the first few notes, I was soon relaxed. As I said, Hilary speeds it up, yet only gives it energy by doing so. Her playing is extremely warm, without being overly dramatic. I can see where a person could think that it might lack a little juice, but this prevents the listener from getting so far into the music that he or she sinks in it, as can happen with Joshua Bell. Also, this prevents fast passages from getting messy. Her slight lack of juice provides for the most difficult passages being crisp, and clear. Having played the vast percentage of the Mendelssohn myself as a student, you really appreciate her playing of it (there's no way I'll be able to play it that fast for MANY years to come), and I truly feel that it is an unblemished, perfect concerto recording.
I have heard the comparison "Night and Day" for this concerto. I prefer "Hot and Cold", leaving the listener lukewarm with amazement.
