Free Music Review: Menomena live up to the hype

If you've never heard of Portland, Oregon's Menomena, I suggest you get acquainted with their music as soon as possible. Reviewers have likened their music to Spoon and TV on the Radio, but once you listen to them you'll realize they have a sound all their own that bridges the gap between quirky and powerful. Their newest album, Friend and Foe, is a collection of twelve songs that are both engaging and unique. Some are quieter and others you can dance to, but every song on the album is a testament to the band's dynamic songwriting. They also succeed in making the saxophone sound good on a rock album, a challenge in its own right. Highlights are opener "Muscle'n Flo", xylophone-and-piano-laden "Wet and Rusting", and the catchy, whistling "Boyscout'n".
