Free Music Notes for Mermaid Avenue Vol. II

Free Music Review: I bought this one first
Hit: 4 Stars

If you never heard the 1st CD, this one is really fresh. If you hear the first one first, maybe you won't like it as well. I think that 5 or 6 tracks are really outstanding. I've bought CD's for less good tracks before. Blood of the Lamb is my favorite... haunting, anti-racist, and very much in keeping with the Christian gospel. I also really enjoy Black Wind Blowing for the bluesy melody. Natalie Merchant sings a cute little song with no real meaning, but it's always nice to hear her voice. I'd buy it again.

Free Music Review: Not as good as MA I, but still great
Hit: 4 Stars

The second installment of Mermaid Avenue is very good. In fact, "Airplane to Heaven" solidifies this as a "great" album. But that's not the only good song here. "Secret of the Sea", "All you Fascists" et al, make for a classic. There's also a good rendition of "It's against the law" (although, I have to admit, Bragg's is better on the 'Til we outnumber 'em' disc.))

Free Music Review: Buy it for the Poetry
Hit: 4 Stars

The most intriguing thing about this album is the sheer range of the artist -- and I'm speaking here of Woody Guthrie. The scope of subjects is ambitious -- from love to racism to workers' rights -- but the sincerity of the words never ebbs. Even if you are tepid on Wilco or Bragg, consider buying the album for the lyrics sheet -- practical poetry at its most human and accessible.

Free Music Review: Pretty good
Hit: 4 Stars

I liked all the Wilco songs, but Billy Bragg wasn't all that great. The former still makes it a worthwhile purchase. Interestingly, a lot of Intellectually Important Music Critics feel that Wilco doesn't do the songs right - that they don't sound like Woody Guthrie songs - whereas Bragg is true to the material. Whatever. Jeff Tweedy sings great on this album.

Free Music Review: A Fine Companion Piece
Hit: 4 Stars

I'm very happy to see Wilco and Billy Bragg back in action together, producing a fine follow-up to one of the best albums in recent years. Fans of the first project will appreciate this more than others, so I'd encourage fans to spread the word about this high-quality performance. Bravo.
