Free Music Notes for Merrily We Roll Along (1994 Off-Broadway Revival Cast)Free Music Review: It will rip your heart out Hit: 5 Stars
Few things make me cry, and this musical is one of them. "Our Time," a sweet song about the strength of friendship and the idealism of youth, makes for the standard happy ending of a musical, until you remember the opening numbers, where you see three people who can barely stand each other, torn apart by their mistakes, wounded by their loyalty. Listening to the last number, I hear Charlie's line near the beginning, "We aren't the three of us anymore, Mary. We're just one and one and one." and I weep. This musical takes a time investment. Buy it. Listen to it for a couple weeks. After you get over the oddness of the backwards time movement, you too will be struck by how strong the emotional content of this musical is. Let the bitter sadness of this show serve as warning of how not to live your life.
Free Music Review: "The Greatest Musical by Sondheim" Hit: 5 Stars
Merrily We Roll Along is the greatest Sondheim musical ever. The 1981 recording is great, but I like this one the best because with a local theater group I performed this version of Merrily We Roll Along and it's amazing. Buy this one and the 1981 recording because they are both amazing. The 1981 performence only ran for 16 performences and this current one ran for a much longer time than that. By this one.
Free Music Review: A Perfect Cast Album of a less than Perfect show. Hit: 5 Stars
"Merrily We Roll Along" is along the lines of "Carrie" in terms of musical flops. However, even thought the book was seriously flawed in this first production, the score remains (as in all Sondheim shows) the star. This light, jazzy, showbusyish recording is absolutely delightful. All of the leads and the fresh young cast are great. Most notibally Ann Morrison.
Free Music Review: Toe-tappin' Journey Through the Mind and Time! Hit: 5 Stars
Not having heard the Original Cast Recording, I can safely say this recording is phenomenal! The cast members' voices are perfectly matched with their characters personalities, and this comes through on the album. The score is definately Sondhiem at his dissonant best! Love it!
Free Music Review: Beautiful recording. Hit: 5 Stars
A great Sondheim score. This original Broadway cast recording is still my favorite.
