Free Music Notes for Chaosphere

Free Music Review: Brutal and uncompromising
Hit: 5 Stars

"Chaosphere" is as heavy and relentless as Meshuggah's past albums. Crushing riffs, pummeling drums, pounding rhythms, throat-shredding vocals...it's all here. But this Swedish quintet doesn't get by on volume, alone; this album includes the band's famous, complex time signatures, as well. Like any Meshuggah album, these songs can be fairly repetitive at times. Fortunately, however, it always manages to keep the listener's attention and interest.

But, even though Meshuggah used all of their old tricks for their third major album, "Chaosphere" manages to sound different than their past works. It's more mature than "Contradictions Collapse" and it isn't nearly as fast as "Destroy Erase Improve."

This album does have a few small flaws, however. First of all, as aforementioned, it can be repetitive at some points (especially Jens' vocals). Plus, in order to be heard, Jens Kidman really lets loose and strains his vocal chords, but the guitar solos are usually pushed to the middle or back of the mix (so they aren't very audible). Finally, even thought it's about as brutal as its predecessor, 1995's "Destroy Erase Improve," this album doesn't have any of the great breakdowns. Fortunately, "Chaosphere" has enough great, over-driven intensity to pull this disc through and makes it worthy of a five star rating.

"Concatenation" steam rolls out of the gate, with super loud, repetitive, lumbering riffs. The vocals begin about half a minute later, and when Jens lets loose a few extended yells, the song becomes a wall of sound that even a jackhammer couldn't penetrate.
"New Millennium Cyanide Christ" features cascading, stutter-stepping, punching riffs, which then turn to stop-start, staccato riffs.
"Corridor of Chameleons" ties machine gun drumming with bobbing, repetitive, 2 chord riffs.
The beginning of "Mouth Licking What You've Bled" sort of blends in with the track before it (track four). Like usual, the iron/steel metal riffs flow from the guitarists' (Marten and Fredrik's) fret boards like water from a faucet, while Tomas goes crazy-fiercely pounding his drum set, creating a booming rhythm.
"Exquisite Machinery of Torture" turns to robotic whispers with more punching guitars. Even though the decibel level jumps every minute or so, most of this song isn't nearly as dominating as usual.
"Elastic" has bobbing, pounding riffs (which are few and far between), around the 4:20 mark. This part of the song, which features Tomas simultaneously pounding his drums, sounds like Fredrik is using a sledgehammer for a guitar pick. That lasts for about a minute and a half, before (what sounds like) a synthesizer makes an appearance and makes a buzzing noise. After about a minute, the synth makes a fast beeping noise, and this gradually fades into a sound which could be helicopter blades. It eventually becomes another increasingly loud beeping noise, before it finally becomes a complete wall of white noise. But, there's a surprise here for you, if you managed to listen to this whole song: at about the 10:20 mark, the band comes out of nowhere and storms back onto the track. Every band member goes all out, but this part of the song sort of sounds fuzzy, like it's being played through an old radio.

Even though it took me a while to warm up to "Chaosphere," but now I think it's somewhere near the top for Meshuggah's best album. Newcomers/first time listeners might hate it at first, but this is the kind of album that, with repeated listens, will become more appealing and less monotonous.

Meshuggah are sort of in a league of their own; they can't be categorized into just one genre. They are an extreme/math metal band, and even though they aren't quite grindcore or thrash metal, I recommend "Chaosphere" to everybody who enjoys those genres.
