Free Music Notes for ObzenFree Music Review: Don't judge too soon. Hit: 5 Stars
There are enough longwinded reviews on Obzen detailing the intricacies of the music and lyrics, that I would rather keep this short and to the point. I have been listening to Meshuggah since 1998 - Destroy was the firt for me, and I have everything before and since. The common theme of Meshuggah albums, is that it can take YEARS to fully grasp and comprehend the music. Everytime I revisit one of the older albums, whether it is Chaosphere, Broken or even Contradictions, I find something new and find a new favorite track. While I like Obzen, I know that my opinion of it will change over time - for the better! This is challenging, complex, difficult music that requires time to fully digest. If you don't have the patience to listen, concentrate and revisit, you will never appreciate this music, so don't waste your time. I suspect most of the low ratings are from people who listened to the album less than 5 times. If you are a true Meshuggah fan and have enjoyed their previous stuff, you will like this -you just need to put in the effort.
Free Music Review: An Extreme, Technical Metal MASTERPIECE Hit: 5 Stars
If you consider yourself a true metal fan, this album is a must have. It will blow you away. It is pure metal intensity that is SO unique in the metal world - because Meshuggah are the ORIGINAL and the BEST extreme technical metal band to ever exist - and in my opinion, no other band will ever come close to their brilliance. Every track is wonderfully written and performed, each with its unique flavour and direction. Track 3 'Bleed' is Meshuggah's complete masterpiece/signature song, like 'Master Of Puppets' or 'One' is to Metallica. I've had the pleasure of seeing Meshuggah live 4 times - and each time they've played 'Bleed' with unbelieveable intensity and precision. The guitar shredding and double kicking in this track are phenominal to say the least - and let me tell you that it sounds even better live than on the album! Check out their ALIVE DVD to see what I'm talking about. If you don't have this album yet - trust me - BUY it today - and you will become like me - a loyal Meshuggah fan for life.
Free Music Review: Welcome back Hit: 5 Stars
After Catch 33, I wasn't really interested in hearing any new music from this band until I read about obZen. Nothing was, I felt, the start of a trend for this band. I dug the slower tempo stuff that they did, but then Catch 33 came out, and it just sounded dull to me. They put out a decent album, and then a boring one 3 years later. I understand experimentation, nobody wants to make the same album twice. 47 minutes and 25 seconds of music, and it's meant to be just one continuous soundtrack over 13 tracks? I was weaned on Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere, those two were their best for me. Then I read that they were returning to their more thrashy sound on obZen, that's what got me interested again. In no way did they abandon the slow tempo groove stuff, but they've picked up the pace and given the sound more bite this time. That tells me that they remembered what made Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere two of their best albums without rehashing anything. This album is a winner in my book.
Free Music Review: STAY AWAY FROM MESHUGGAH!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Meshuggah is not for everyone. My mom says that they should play it in Haunted House attractions to scare the crap out of people. On the other hand, I've heard it called "hypnotic", "sounds like dance music", "is just noise". It is dark, dense, claustrophobic, and melodically sparse. Meshuggah REALLY makes you work for your melody.
I have a very analytical mind and I cannot stop listening to Meshuggah. The rhythms, though all 4/4 are so complex that I hear many of them differently on each listen.
I have to listen to a Meshuggah album at least 5 times before I form an opinion about it. After over 5 listens, I can now say that this ties with Catch 33 as my favorite of their albums with Chaosphere, Destroy Erase Improve and Nothing not far behind. I am a rare Meshuggah fan, since most didnt like OBZEN or CATCH 33 that much, but I cant get enough of them. Meshuggah keeps getting better and better.
Meshuggah will rattle your brain.
Free Music Review: Reaching For The Alien Shore Hit: 5 Stars
So many strange and vivid images came to me whilst listening to Obzen. Black waves crashing against an alien shore, razor sharp rocks red and bleeding, great currents sweeping through a sea that is tipped white foam and bottomless.
'Bleed' rises and shifts, slows and accelerates, a rhythmic powerhouse of steel and stamina. 'Lethargica' invokes a void where a black nothingness beckons, droning and vampiric, the throat of an indifferent universe engulfs human insignifigance, a hulking unstoppable force. All being comes to a stop at a pin-point of silence in dead space, surrounded by a vast, 'Electric Red' shroud.
Meshuggah are truly pioneers and with Obzen they evoke the bleak but beautiful poetry of space and ask if the seemingly meaningless state of humanity at this point in time is our zenith.
Yet, at the heart of the music is everything that makes us worthwhile; intelligence, imagination and spirit.
