Free Music Notes for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Original Soundtrack

Free Music Review: MGS3 Sndtrk Review
Hit: 5 Stars

The Metal Gear series has had no shortage of good tunes. Since the series' rebirth on the PS1 the music has continued evolve into a far more structured storytelling device as apposed to just being there for the sake of being cool.

I actually own the soundtracks to 2, 3, and 4. Two was a bit of a disappointment for me. With the exception of two tracks, most of the "score" played more like mood music than an actual score. I could tell Harry Gregson-Williams was still experimenting and getting a feel for the classic themes. With Snake Eater, Williams blows the door wide open and, finally, we are left with what is arguably one of the best scores in the series.

The opening track "Snake Eater" (music by Norihiko Hibino and featuring Cynthia Harell on vocals) is a total throwback to the old spy films. In particular the 007 films. I just can't listen to this song and NOT picture the opening credits of a Bond film. Some people found this song to be comical for an otherwise serious tale, if not all together cheesy. I must admit that I like it. It's fitting for the time period in which the story takes place and it's just good ol' fashion fun.

Williams keeps his focus through out the score, exploring classic Metal Gear themes and offering some of the most emotional moments in gaming history. It's very cinematic which is fitting for a game that is best known for its long, drawn out cutscenes. Tracks like "Debriefing", "Eva's Reminiscence", and "Life's End" do a wonderful job of capturing the emotional essence of the games story while songs like "Way To Fall" (Starsailor) work to supplement Williams' score to the point of tears.

In short, "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" hits all the right notes in all the right places and is a must have for fans of this genre of music. If you pick this one up I highly suggest spending the extra money and getting the MGS4 soundtrack as it sort of "completes" the experience. The two scores are made for each other and it's just fun to listen to how the themes have grown over the years. Here's To You Williams. You've done a fantastic job.

Free Music Review: Outstanding soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

The Metal Gear series is not one that I ever really cared for, mainly due to the gameplay style. Of course, that does not really answer why a fellow who doesn't like the games would have a soundtrack to one.

The short of it is, it is because the soundtrack is outstanding.

One thing that you can say about the Metal Gear series is that it has excellent production values (NES game notwithstanding) and this carries over to the soundtrack as well. The first time I listened to it, I was utterly shocked at exactly how listenable it was. Not all game soundtracks fare as well.

Consisting of a 2 disc set, the soundtrack has at total of 43 tracks. About two thirds of the discs contain mostly symphonic and ambient tracks relating to the various levels of the game. I think one has to be in the right mood to listen to all of them at once, but they're solid pieces overall.

It's the remaining tracks are a bit more varied and fun.

They cover a number of music styles, including rock and roll, jazz, rock ballads and surf rock reminiscent of bands like the Ventures and Surfari's. These tracks are strategically placed at the end of each disc to perhaps serve as a pallet cleanser after all the ambient stuff.

It's an eclectic mix of music and some tracks are better than others but all of it is musically excellent and well produced with some of the same quirky humor one finds in the games.

The most fun of all has to be "Snake Eater" which has all the musical cues and lyrics of a 1970's James Bond film theme song sung by Cynthia Harrell. Also notable is Don't Be Afraid, breathily sung by Elisa Fiorillo and Way to Fall, a ballad by Star Sailor.

Overall, this is definitely one of the best game soundtracks I've had the pleasure to own and a must-get for fans of the game.

Free Music Review: The Magic continues..
Hit: 5 Stars

*WARNING: May contain spoilers if you haven't played MGS3 yet*
The MGS1 left me truely impressed. It was simply my favourite, but honestly MGS2 left me disappointed. The MGS1 music was composed by Tappy, while the MGS2 music was composed by Harry-Gregson Williams (The Rock, Enemy Of The State). Some of it was good, like the main theme which was done brilliantly in a way that suits the MGS2 universe, and I guess the boss battles were ok, but the rest wasn't as brilliantly done as MGS1. In MGS3 the music is actually composed by six musicians ! Harry-Gregson Williams returns with a yet even better main theme, and he also made some brilliant pieces, like the Halo jump event, and the escape sequance all the way to fighting the Shagohod. And, of all the movie or game songs I've ever heard in my life, Snake Eater was unique ! The way the whole thing was put together was just brilliant ! First, they don't show you an intro, like in the beginning of every Metal Gear game, and the game starts directly, then they write "Directed by Hideo Kojima" after the Halo hump, so they make you think that the game has been introduced, and while you're playing normally, thinking that this is another mission in the Metal Gear that's going to last for 8-10 hours, Snake is beaten up, thrown in the water, and heavily irradiated by a nuclear explosion ! The scene with the mushroom shaped nuclear explosion was breathtaking, and just then, while your mind is in a completely different place, the screen is interrupted by a smooth-slow swift sound while it says "Konami Computer Entertainment Presents" and then, one of the most awesome, if not THE best video gaming/movies moment begins, the Snake Eater song, with the main titles designed by Kyle Cooper, and vocals by Cynthia Harrel ! This is truely a must buy, not just for fans, but for anyone that is remotely related to MGS3 !

Free Music Review: Harry Gregson-Williams Turns This Game Into A Cinematic Experience
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a huge Metal Gear Solid fan, and when I heard that Harry Gregson-Williams would be joining in to compose the second game I got so excited, and was even more excited when he stayed for #3. Hans Zimmer is my favorite composer of all time, and I absolutely love every composer that comes out of Media Ventures. Williams keeps the feel of the original soundtrack, but adds his trademark techno spin to it. Fans will recognize the same style in Spy Game, Phonebooth, and The Rundown. The game becomes a film all because of the amazing talents of Williams. It's also interesting that he composed all the music solely based on Hideo Kojimas descriptions of atmosphere and actions. Usually scores are composed when a finished film has been presented to the composer, here Williams worked only off of sketches and writings. But the price here on Amazon is very high, at GKWorld they sell it for 13 dollars brand new.

Free Music Review: A MUST HAVE
Hit: 5 Stars

I give this a 10 out of 5.

Most favorite game soundtrack I own aside from my Silent Hill OSTs. (Konami has got some serious musical talent in their company , don't they?)It has every song you were lookin for. I personally enjoyed the opening themes, Ocelot's battle theme,"The Fury's battle theme, and ultra swingin retro "Surfing Guitar" and other Healing Radio tracks . I can play out the scenarios in my head, and be taken to a time era I wasn't even born in with the guitar effects listenin to this. Pretty expensive here, but worth it.
