Free Music Notes for Live Shit: Binge & Purge (CD & DVD)Free Music Review: Huge Hit: 5 Stars
One word describes this release - HUGE! It comes in a huge box, shaped like a band's footlocker. There's a huge nine hours of music inside the box, including a huge triple CD live album and three video tapes of live footage, along with an old back stage pass, a book full of hundreds of pictures and Metallica related documents, and a scary guy stencil. Forget the videos and the packaging, let's concentrate on the live album.Anyone who has ever seen Metallica can attest to how tight the band are as a live unit, and it shows. There's hardly a slip to be detected anywhere in the entire album. It's not a one shot demonstration of the band however, as it was gathered from five nights in Mexico in 1993. The breaks are hard to find though. And how does Metallica rate live? A fan really could not ask for much more in a live album. A faithful journey through Metallica's first five albums, a few covers, reinterpretations of some older songs, an excellent showcase of the talents of the band members, James Hetfield's corny but friendly stage banter, and a big dose of plain old heavy metal. Highlights: the insane reaction of audience members Hetfield grabs to help with singing Seek And Destroy; the addition of the unlisted So What?; Jason Newsted's vocals and the extra gear of Whiplash; Kirk Hammett hitting the solo to One almost note perfect; the near on religious rapture of the entire audience at hearing Metallica live. One small criticism: the bass and guitar solos by Jason and Kirk both show their utter mastery of their respective instruments, and hold your attention throughout the almost 19 minute break, but why so long? Perhaps cut it back to 10 minutes and throw in another song, like "Fight Fire With Fire" or "Disposable Heroes" or "Leper Messiah". Every fan of Metallica needs to hear this. It puts the stodgy, overblown orchestral theatrics of S&M firmly in its place. This is THE definitive Metallica live album. It really should have been given a wider release than this oversized shoebox.
Free Music Review: "A Celebration of 10 Years of Metallica Recordings" Hit: 5 Stars
This convenient "2 DVD/ 3 CD" set by Metallica, is a great collection of all of their hits from 1983 to 1993 performed live. The three concerts are drawn from 1989's "Damaged Justice Tour" and 1992/1993's "Black Album Tour." All of their 5 albums up until that point (1991's "Metallica") are represented by hit singles like "Creeping Death", "Harvester of Sorrow", "One", "Wherever I May Roam", "Nothing Else Matters", and "Enter Sandman", as well as the fan favorites "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Fade to Black", "Whiplash", "Battery", "Seek & Destroy", and "Sanitarium." Also included, are the covers of "Little Wing (Kirk Hammett/Hendrix)", "Am I Evil? (Diamond Head)", "Stone Cold Crazy (Queen)", "Breadfan (Budgie)", and the Misfits classic "Last Caress." As a special treat, James, Lars, Kirk, and Jason perform a medley of the longest compositions on the "...And Justice For All (1988)" LP. The Songs "Eye of the Beholder", "Frayed Ends of Sanity", "Justice For All", and the awesome "Blackened" are combined to make a great pile of Sh*t. The second DVD alone (1989's "Justice" Tour) is worth the $52 I spent on this baby. It was nice to see and hear the full versions of "Master of Puppets", "The Thing That Should Not Be", and "The Four Horsemen", which are by far Metallica's heaviest tunes. Hopefully Metallica will release a new concert DVD of their current "2003/2004 tour" with Robert Trujillo on bass. I recently purchased the "Frantic" import CD single, which features "Blackened" and "Harvester of Sorrow" performed live in June of 2003. This is a great indication of the current power of Metallica's live performances.
Free Music Review: Only Metallica!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Only Metallica would give there fans something this great!!! 2DVD's, 3CD's, snakepit pass, scary guy stencil, and book on DVD 2. All together 3 full concerts!!! 2 from the black album tour and 1 from the ...and justice for all tour!!! (my fave)... The First DVD is a full show from the Black Album tour, the Second DVD is a full show from the And justice for all tour... The 3 cds are collected from the 4 nights they played in Mexico City!!! All are great quality, regardless of what anyone says. Trust me, for being recorded in the late 80's early 90's, the quality on all disc is spectacular!!! As I said DVD 2 is my fave from the and justice for all tour!! Metallica was in there prime!!! The energy, the show, the heaviness is just unreal in this dvd!!! Plus you get ...and justice for all (the song, not the album) performed in its entirety!!! That alone is worth the price!!! DVD 1 is great also, my only complaint is how fast the cameras switch to each person for this show... I know there was a lot going on but it gets a little ridiculous...But its only a small complaint and it might just be me... You get used to it after the first song... Music is great, James voice is perfect on all disc's... You will not regret this purchase.. This was given to me by my wife on my birthday (over a month ago) and I havent been able to stop listening and watching this box set!! Come on people $50 is awesome price for this set, considering it used to be about $100 (and that set came with vhs tapes)... This is by far a great deal, and by far a no brainer if you are considering buying it!!! Stop reading, add to cart, and enjoy one of the best box sets out there!!!
P.S. You are also missing a drum solo that is both awesome and hilarious on dvd 1, james gets behind the second drumkit while lars is having his drum solo and......well you'll see!! Also the stuff James says to the crowd between songs is hilarious and vulgar, but its Metallica, what you expect!!!
Free Music Review: Quintessential Metal Hit: 5 Stars
Yes, I dont like post Black Album Metallica and who does? But I would kill for the pre Black Album metal that this great band produced. I grew up listening to Master of Puppets, Justice, Ride and Kill. And this is what is inside BINGE & PURGE. The most incredible live experiance from a great metal band. I was fortunate enough to see 'tallica live but this show they taped in Mexico City is huge. Its about 3 hours and has all the great Metallica songs in it. The sound quality is great, the song sequencing is awesome and James just blows everyone away, live. One of the most underrated singer/songwriter/guitarist of out generation, James shows what the F*&k to do. Not for a minute is this great live CD boring. If you are old Metallica fan and love the band to death, like I do, please dont hesitate for a second to buy this Work of Art.
Coming to the 2 DVDs. Both rock though I prefer the second cd (Damaged Justice Tour). It has the superb Justice tittle track performed in its entirity and this money is worth just for that. What a great live band! The boys dont miss a note, ripp apart their cover anthems and just show us how to rock. I am just blown away by their live performance everytime I see this DVD. Newstead is the craziest headbanger out there. Man, show him to your kids, I will too. He bangs the head that doesnt bang. This was 89, I saw them live in 99, a decade apart, but Newstead dint change anything, the same ferocious headbanger all the same. What a loss to the band!
My compliant with the CD is the beautiful Metallica 62 page book is included in the II DVD and not in hard print. This sucks because you cant read a book on a TV. I wish Electra included a hardcopy.
Get this set today, its essential for any metal music for Metallica fans. At the end, whats going to echo in your ears is the voice of James, GIMME MORE...GIMME *UCKIN* MORE....Metalicca Ruled!
Free Music Review: Best box set I've ever owned Hit: 5 Stars
Simply put, this is the best box set I've ever owned. Granted, I'm a huge Metallica fan and I'm probably inclined to fall in love with anything they release. But Metallica rips it live, and this box set showcases over eight hours of that. On both the CDs and DVDs (a Mexico City show on the CDs, and full Seattle and San Diego shows on the DVDs), you hear a completely different side of the band. While their studio recordings are tight and emotional, their live set conveys the sense that Metallica have fun when they play live. There is a certain leaning toward improvisation that makes listening to these tracks a blast. The sound quality isn't as good as on S&M, probably because these shows were recorded in the early nineties, and the high-budget production of that era falls short of what you can expect of live recordings from the past few years. But it's still great to listen to a different interpretation of their songs. When they play live, their tunes sound different than their studio counterparts, but this is actually a positive thing; there are certain moments when they let things hang, and then pummel the tension whenever they feel like it, which gives the sets kind of a jammy feel. Hetfield's comments to the crowd are left in, which was the only dissapointing thing about S&M; it's great to hear James interact with the crowd. As he pumps them up, you feel energized as well. The show from the Black Album tour is impressive, but the direction is somewhat choppy. The ...And Justice For All show is directed brilliantly, and their set comes across as very epic and powerful. Like I said, best box set I've ever owned. And it's loads cheaper than the VHS version, so I'd recommend this to any hardcore Metallica fan, or anyone who loves hearing quality live albums.
