Free Music Notes for Live Shit: Binge & Purge (CD & DVD)Free Music Review: Better than VHS for one reason Hit: 5 Stars
It's CHEAPER- DUH! I love Metallica, but I'm not about to drop all that cash for three stupid VHS tapes. I'd rather pay less and get DVD's anyway. I'm no DVD snob, so the picture and sound quality look pretty good to me. It's very good when you consider that the Seattle show was recorded LIVE, in an arena (just perfect acustics in those) with I can't tell how many absoultely silent fans in the audience (they weren't silent, you say? They were yelling, screaming, and singing along? Maybe THAT'S what all the background noise is? HMMMM) San Diego- same reasons. Yes, Cunning Stuns and S&M look and sound a lot better, but look at all the new technology that was available to the producers of those two concerts that Live Sh*t's could only dream of. That being said, I love this set. The three live CD's sound very crisp and clean, with little feedback, unlike other live recordings (bootleg and official release) that I've heard. The two DVD's are awsome! They capture perfectly Metallica in their heyday! The energy and enthusiam that The 'Boys put into their concerts is amazing. Plus, once again, THE VIEDO QUALITY IS JUST FINE. The convienince and life span (they don't wear out) of DVD's is good, too. If I wanted to skip from, say, Sandman on Disc 1 to Harvester of Sorrow, I would only have to hit the >>] on my remote, rather than fast forward through an hour's worth of tape. So, I don't think this was a "gimme yer money" ploy by Metallica. In fact, I'm GLAD they rereleased this set. It's more conveineint to watch and listen to, but above all else, it's actually reasonably priced this time around. (I guess they spent all the extra cash from the VHS version on the box?)
Free Music Review: When Metallica ruled the world. Hit: 5 Stars
Once upon a time, before Napster lawsuits and psychiatrists, was a mighty band called Metallica who ruled the world with a mighty fist and pummelling riffage. "Live Sh*t, Binge and Purge" is the definitive live Metallica collection of Metallica in their prime. Never again have they been so mighty.
The Seattle show highlights the album, "...And Justice for All" on their Damaged Justice tour. This show is full of the intensity and rage that new Metallica fans have missed out on in recent years. With new bassist, Jason Newstead, they are filled with a new fire as is evident from the get go on "Blackened."
The San Diego discs give us Metallica at their height on the Black Album tour. This was the first tour that Metallica used the "in-the-round" stage setting where the stage was set in the middle of the arena giving 360 degree access to the show. Special guests could also watch the show from the pit area in the middle of the stage. A replica of the pit passes comes with the box set and is a nice addition for fans who have missed out on the originals.
Live Sh*it is a must have for any Metallica fan who wants to relive the glory days or a new fan who needs to know of what once was. This is the furious, pissed off, drunk, swearing, in your face, Metallica that we remember from long ago. So, CHEERS, to the glory days!
Free Music Review: one of the better live albums out there Hit: 5 Stars
This Metallica box set is great for us Metallica fans that missed out on seeing them live back in the day when they were the kings of the thrash scene. The CDs are great- Metallica plays all of their greatest songs from Kill 'Em All to the 'Black Album", and perform with so much energy. Binge and Purge show that Metallica actually has a sense of humor. On the studio albums, Metallica plays with a robotic sense of perfection on albums like Master Of Puppets and Justice For All. On Seek and Destroy, James interacts with the crowd in Mexico, which is actually quite funny. The highlights of the Cd's are the songs from Kill 'Em All; with 10 years past since that album, James voice has improved and really puts on a great performance. Everyone is in fine form; Lars, James, Kirk, and Jason. The DVDs are more of the same; the setlists are almost identical. But, Metallica performs the songs with the same high level of skill as on the CDs.
I recommend this to all old-school Metallica fans; fans of the newer material should check out S&M, which in my opinion isn't nearly as good as this box set.
Free Music Review: Hell yeah !!! Hit: 5 Stars
When Kiss released a 'cheaper' version of their Symphony double CD they totally destroyed their original version. And that one didn't even originally come in a big filled flightcase... Metallica now shows how to really 'repackage' something. Sure the big book isn't there in paper but it IS included on DVD ! The European version of this CD/DVD box (a staggering 5 discs in total !) has the size of a DVD box and when you open it up you will find a thick CD jewel case (as originally featured in the box) but this contains the 3 CD's and 2 DVD's and a schrunken-down version of the stencil (still VERY neat !) and a reprint of the snakepit pass. I once had the big box in a time when my VCR liked to eat long videotapes so those went to hell. Now I was able to welcome these shows to DVD heaven !!! Cranck it up to 10 (and if that isn't your maximum.... cranck it up louder) and enjoy the full blast of Metallica in my favourite time of their carreer !!! 100% worth every cent !!! And I'm not even a fan so if I'm this happy with it... well.... stop reading my review and start ordering it !!!
Free Music Review: 3+2 discs gives you 5 = pure entertainment! Hit: 5 Stars
A truly inspired and mesmerizing piece of work that gives you 3 music CDs of their concert in Mexico in '93, plus 2 DVDs of a live concert taking place in San Diego (Disc 1) in '92 and Seattle (Disc 2) in '89. It comes in an equipment trunk-inspired box with a backstage pass sticker and an evil guy stencil inside. In my opinion, it is money well spent on something like this. Combining their greatest hits from Kill 'Em All to the Black Album, we are treated to bass solos, drum solos, guitar riff solos, and even an interesting drum face/off between Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield (who knew he could play drums?).
The excitement comes from not just the fast songs and strumming from the band, but the fun that Hetfield brings when trying to bring the audience into their world, especially during "Seek and Destroy," viewed on the first DVD and heard on the second CD.
In a word, priceless. It belongs in any real Metallica fan's collection and should be treasure forever. Truly amazing!
