Free Music Notes for MetallicaFree Music Review: The beginning of the downward slide Hit: 4 StarsIt's a bit ironic that Metallica's least heavy release up to that point was the one that made metal mainstream. Sure the Glam bands had ruled the charts for 1/2 a decade at this point, but that's not really metal. (Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan of nearly everything Glam, Sunset Strip, or "Pop Metal".) Still Metallica came along and managed to be the first 80's band that it was still "okay" to be into after grunge killed the music industry. This was Metallica's monster album (pun only slightly intended), but it's ironic that it was almost nothing like the four that proceeded it. I only give this album 4 stars for "Enter Sandman", "Where ever I May Roam", and "Unforgiven". The rest is forgetable filler, which is really the first time that type of material showed up on a Metallica record. I prefer the first three to this, but then again I can remember when Metallica was releasing bootleg recordings on picture discs instead of taking their fans to court.
Free Music Review: The record that sent them Spiraling downward Hit: 2 StarsWow, what can I say about this album that hasn't already been said? Let's start with the obvious: THIS ISN'T THRASH!!!! What were they thinking? The technicality is still kind of there on this album, but the raw speed which made their first four records so good is almost entirely missing. There are some tempo shifts, but there is not the progressive 'feel' of '...And Justice for All' or 'Master of Puppets'. Next, we have Hetfield's vocals. They're decent, but he doesn't have the rebellious, rip-your-soul-out style any more, going more for the mainstream sound. Overall, this is an OK album if you like the post-1991 era Metallica. But, if you are a thrash maniac like me, DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!!
Free Music Review: Sadly where a good thing ended Hit: 4 StarsThis album is one of the best put out by Metallica and I own pretty much all of them. However after this one I am not so sure I still like the style or direction they took, and that whole Napster fiasco certainly didn't add to their credibility in my book. What I liked about this album was the power in the lyrics and without second guessing I can say "Enter Sandman" is one of the best.
Hopefully they go back to the old style, but I fear they probably won't.
Free Music Review: Metallica Did Not Sell Out! Hit: 5 StarsFirst of all, Metallica did not sell out. I hate it when some idiot says that Metallica sold out just because they happen to write good songs that other people enjoyed. Yes, if you said this you're a jack@$$. Ok, this album is good overall. It has some good hard stuff that is good. I love don't Tread On Me. You should give this album a try and if you end up saying Metallica sold out you are not a true Metallica fan.
Free Music Review: Metallica reaches their potential Hit: 5 StarsThis is Metallica's most complete album. It has fast songs, slower songs, and overall, shorter songs than previous albums. It doesn't quite have the anger that defined their earlier work and they slowed things down a bit but the intensity is still present...and that's always important.
There are no fillers on this album, every song is solid and well constructed, especially the first half of the album, which contains a slew of hits that you'll hear on rock stations everywhere. "Enter Sandman" and "Sad But True" are the crushing openers, and "The Unforgiven" was the most lyrically-personal song for James up to that point. A hidden gem that you'll find later in the album is a song titled "My Friend of Misery", it's very impressive.
If you don't already have this album and are a fan of any genre involving rock, then buy this immediately. It didn't win a grammy for nothing.
