Free Music Notes for Donnie Darko (Score)Free Music Review: A Haunting, Simplistic Score Hit: 5 Stars
I enjoy listening to movie music, but with that, I also find most movie music to be just that: music that you listen to in a movie, easily forgotten when the film is done. However, every now and then a score comes along that is not only an intregal part of the film, but so creative and melodic that I HAVE to go out and get it. The first score I ever listened to that impressed me enough to make me buy it was the Damon Albarn and Michael Nyman collaboration for the movie Ravenous. The second was the Michael Andrews score for the movie Donnie Darko. The music is simple but effective... sounding almost like it should belong on a Pure Moods CD, the haunting melodies flow throughout the entire CD, finally ending in easily the most beautiful remake of any 80's Techno song (Mad World, as performed by Gary Jules, originally from Tears for Fears). I often listen to this music at night to put me to sleep. A must have for anyone who enjoyed the movie, or anyone who is into original movie scores.
Free Music Review: One of my favorite soundtracks in a collection of over 120. Hit: 5 Stars
I'll be the first to admit I've never heard of Michael Andrews. But when I finally got around to watching Donnie Darko, I sat amazed by the brilliant work he does here in Donnie Darko.
All the songs from the film are here(score wise), even the trailer music. This is certainly some of the moodiest music I've ever heard, bordering on something dark, but not quite landing there. The music reveberates the surreal suburbanite feeling and the consciously ethereal undertow that surrounds the film, and man oh friggin man, it's a delicious soundscape.
If you enjoyed the score music to Memento, The Forgotten, The Village, Fargo, and scores like that, you'll be pleased to know that Donnie Darko is ahead of those in terms of originality and mood setting.
Great music to write stories to. I find some of the tracks really inspired my thoughts a great deal. My only complaint is that I didn't know this cd existed for the last FOUR YEARS!
Free Music Review: A Crucial Part To The Beauty Of Donnie Darko Hit: 5 Stars
Donnie Darko was an amazing film. It was quite sad, yet in a beautiful way. And I truly don't believe it would have been as good as it was if this score had not been included. Nothing fits the brilliantly sombre mood of the film like these tracks. Using a piano, a choir, cellos, violins and plenty more, in some ways, Michael Andrews created a soundtrack to life. Most of these songs are recognizably melodic and, in short, "pretty". But this is the complete fill of the Donnie Darko mood. Through darkness and through light, it is all on this album. A perfect CD for your solitary listening. And of course, Gary Jules' version of "Mad World" is on here to close the album. Could it be any better? I think not. Giving the film possibly one of it's greatest touches, Michael Andrew's score/soundtrack will surely bring you audible (and in a way, visual) pleasure time and time again.

My review title hints at my usual prerequisites for a soundtrack. This debut!by Andrews has it in spades. The movie is probably my favorite of last year and I now own the dvd,but a large portion of its' charm is due to its' haunting score. I haven't seen the cd in the stores anywhere so on the second viewing of the film,(and knowing by then the music was a must have),I ran to Amazon to make sure it was available.Thank the gods it is!That funeral dirge/gothic lament track is worth the price alone.Sooo beeautiful.I used to be a rabid soundtrack collector, but for the past three or four years that habit dropped off and was forgotten, I guess because nothing much grabbed me when I saw a film--until this one. It's the first soundtrack purchase I've made in a long time.

wow, well im glad that i saw this movie because im a huge fan of film and ive never really had a favorite one up until now...undbelievable film...the last time i watched it was at home with the surround sound on and thats when i picked up on how amazing the soundtrack was as well! i couldnt believe it, so fitting to the movie. i would say donnie darko is almost like a rock opera, similar to the wall or tommy...simply because of the huge effect the ambient music has on the overall product, i also think it's a must to see the movie in order to fully understand the musical score, otherwise you will not appreciate it as much, this is a fact. favorite song is "mad world" very simple but moving to me.
