Free Music Notes for Call Me Irresponsible

Free Music Review: Not irresponsible at all!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Canadian crooner, Michael Bublé could sing the phone book and render it poetic. Thankfully, he does an album of mostly covers, with big band arrangements in places, and sparse, whispering arrangements in others.

It's great to see that albums like this can still top the Billboard charts which seem to be cluttered with Hip hop acts these days. The album also got to #2 in the UK.

Falling into the big band treatment are songs like "L.O.V.E.', "I've got the world on a string" (with a live feel), "Call me irresponsible, "The best is yet to come", "That's life" (with a gospel choir flitting in and out), and an excellent remake of Leonard Cohen's "I'm your man". The only other cover of this song that I enjoy is Nick Cave's which featured on the soundtrack "Leonard Cohen: I'm your man" (a fantastic CD too).

Eric Clapton's "Wonderful tonight gets an acoustic, piano sprinkled makeover, with bilingual lyrics, it's a duet with Brazilian Ivan Lins. Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs Jones" gets the quiet storm treatment, while "Comin' home baby" features beautiful harmonising from Boyz II Men, giving it a soulful feel.

Getting the sparse treatment are the beautiful "Lost" (a Bublé original which already sounds like a classic), "Everything" (another Bublé original), "Dream" (remniscent of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile"), and a stunning rendition of "Always on my mind", which starts off as a delicate piano ballad with strings and subtle shuffling percussion creeping in after the first chorus.

Standout, and my favourite is "It had better be tonight (Meglio Stasera)", a charming, upbeat salsa horn drenched rendering, similar to Donna Summer's (yes) performance of this in the early 70s.

Awesome!!

If you like this, try "From this moment on" by Diana Krall, and "Catching tales" and "Twentysomething" by avant garde Brit Jamie Cullum.

Free Music Review: Michael Buble Finally Finds His Own Voice
Hit: 5 Stars

Though the ghosts of Frank Sinatra and Peter Allen still battle for his soul, in his new CD "Call Me Irresponsible" Michael Buble has finally found his own voice and personality. For those who doubt that his channeling Harry Connick Jr. channeling Frank Sinatra schtick is done, jump to his rendition of the Sinatra signature song "That's Life" and listen to his unaffected vocal amid the combination of both gospel choir and big band.

Looking for other sources of inspiration has led Buble to Billy Paul for "Me And Mrs. Jones" which is done in a more matter-of-fact manner than the hand-wringing original; to Jack Jones for the title cut "Call Me Irresponsible" which is more laid back than the original despite the big band arrangement; to Eric Clapton whose "Wonderful Tonight" becomes a lovely Latin love song with assistance from the great Ivan Lins; and to Willie Nelson whose "Always On My Mind" is a beautiful song which gets the beautiful voice it deserves. A wide variety of sources and styles that Michael masters and makes his own.

Two polished diamonds that cement the new identity are "Everything" in which all previous influences are absent and it is Michael Buble emerging as his own man and the tender and laid back "I'm Your Man."

Special mention must go to the arrangements which swing when they need to and modulate for the tender moments such as "Lost." The upbeat arrangements of "It Had Better Be Tonight" (which can only be described as big band Italian salsa) and "Comin' Home Baby" (with it's backing vocals from Boyz II Men) are just brilliant.

A must for fans and a step towards world dominance by this Canadian superhero, this is a wonderful leap forward for an artist who in the past has been weighed down by his influences. But as he warns us all with the CD opener, "The Best Is Yet To Come."

Free Music Review: THE BEST FROM BUBLE YET
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a huge Michael Buble fan and seriously wondered if this cd would be a simple retread, safely copying his succesful formula of mixing the classics with the contemporary.

All fears be gone. Yes, he uses the same formula but he flies and soars above all his past recordings. Let me start by saying I have had the awesome pleasure of seeing Michael live in concert and he is dynamic, passionate a true gifted performer.

This cd is the first that puts out that passion and intensity thru studio recordings. An amazing feat. The classics are made fresh and new. There is not a mis-step here. There are many contemporary numbers and I find they all blend together perfectly. I never say - oh, here is an old one.

There are many standouts for me - ME AND MRS. JONES, I'M YOUR MAN, LOST EVERYTHING and an amazing modern interpretation of THAT'S LIFE.

I just find this cd amazing. The ballads are more intense, the fast numbers more joyful, the band more exuberant. There are so many singers today who sing the classics but Michael Buble has finally grown to the position of not needing to be compared to any other singer ever again.

He has come into his own. He is Michael Buble and now they will need to start comparing singers to him. I love music and when a true artist reaches their prime, it is amazing to hear. That is what this is.

As for the lisp, yes he has a slight one but I dis that reviewer who mocked him so strongly. Michael Buble just stated in an interview how his recording sessions are nerve racking. He uses no filters, etc. It is purely his voice, raw and real - totally natural. If his vocal style has developed to have the slight lisp it only adds a distinction to his style in my opinion.

This one should get him his long overdue Grammy.

Free Music Review: Classic style with modern sensibility
Hit: 5 Stars

I know a prior generation would disagree, but Michael really trumps Sinatra in every way once again. Before the mobs show up at my door with torches and pitch forks, let me explain.

Sinatra was obviously revolutionary in his time. If Michael merely mimicked Sinatra he wouldn't have a career beyond a Vegas lounge act for the geriatric set, accompanied by the sound of one-armed bandits and clunking coins. Instead, he combines what would be considered an old-school sensibility with a very young jazz sound. The weaving together of these two sounds is really what makes him unique in every way.

Good evidence of this can be observed anywhere on this album. "I've Got The World On A String" has every bit of the flouncing bright-shiny gotta dance sensibility that prior versions had with the punchy addition of background vocals in call and response verses similar to old big band swing but packaged for modern appeal.

"Lost" is absolutely stellar. The beautiful and deep sense of longing is hypnotic and beautiful. I found myself playing the track over and over again as though it were the only song on the album.

And I'm pretty sure that "I'm Your Man" may very well cause many to take an unexpected cold shower.

Energy, flair, and hypnotic beauty all are within this album. Destined to remain a classic.

Free Music Review: More great Buble!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard of Michael Buble, I thought he was just going to be a Harry Connick wannabe, but he is in a class of his own. In my opinion, he doesn't simply have a beautiful voice; his singing style has a lot of character too. I feel like he's really enjoying himself when he's performing.

After falling in love with "It's Time," I figured "Call Me "Irresponsible" could only be a disappointment. How happy I am to be wrong! Buble is awesome here, and there are a lot of great songs to enjoy besides the hit "Everything." I love "It Had Better Be Tonight (Meglio Stasera)," the duet with Boyz II Men ("Comin' Home Baby"), and "Wonderful Tonight" w/Ivan Lins. I often don't enjoy remakes of classic songs by newer artists, but when Buble is singing them, I find myself forgetting what the original sounds like! He makes everything sound terrific. Even "Me and Mrs. Jones," despite not having quite enough soul for my taste or some reviewers, is pretty darn good.

Listening to Buble always puts me in a great mood, so go ahead and buy this CD if you don't have it already. You'll be glad you did!
