Free Music Notes for Yell Fire!Free Music Review: A brilliant & inspired CD with an important life-affirming message! Hit: 5 StarsI've loved Michael Franti's music through The Beatnigs, Disposable Heroes of Hiphopricy and since the beginnings of Spearhead. The anger of Disposable Heroes resonated with me, but now I feel I understand the deeper spirtual truth of the songs on the more recent Spearhead albums. There's an evolution not only in understanding where one stands in a conflict, but realizing that in the end, we all actually stand on the same side - the side of live, the side of love, the side of hope. Namaste, Michael Franti and Spearhead, for the joy and truth that you bring to the world.
Free Music Review: Best Studio Album to Date Hit: 5 StarsMF/Spearhead are probably my favorite act to see live. As probably anyone who has seen them live can attest to, they consistently put on an energetic and addictive live show that is hard to beat.
That being said, they have suffered from the same problem that many other bands that are know for their live shows suffer from which is the inability to translate their energy and message into their studio efforts.
Up to this point the majority of the Spearhead albums were poorly produced and failed to do the band the justice they deserve. Yell Fire, however, is a welcomed change in an otherwise disappointing discography.
While I totally applaud Franti for going his own way by shunning the major label system I cannot help but wonder what would the result would be if a real pro, like Rick Rubin, was behind the boards.
But alas...that will probably never happen and for as much as I would love to Spearhead's message projected to the masses I would equally hate to be forced to see them at some mega outdoor arena for $100 a ticket.
In summary...buy this album and the next time they are in your town go to the show. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Yell Fire Hit: 5 StarsI've seen Michael Franti in concert. While this doesn't capture his intensity on stage, it's still an excellent CD and the next best thing to being there!
Free Music Review: Awesome lyrics varied music! Hit: 4 StarsMichael Frant's poetry is at once timely and timeless. He uses current, hard hitting, political images and themes to express an open-minded, inclusive, compassionate philosophy that makes me feel like simply listening to him is a step toward a more peaceful, generous world.
I'm 55; this album was recommended to me by a couple of 23 year olds. And while "Yell Fire!" is all about a driving stand up and be counted rhythm, "One Step Closer to You" is the perfect mellow choice for a Middle School slow dance. It's a revolution for all ages!!!
Free Music Review: Lives on my CD player Hit: 5 StarsIs Michael Franti a bodhisattva? I think so. His message is love, and his music is irresistibly danceable. His concerts are like revivals, but instead of preaching he seduces, with organic rhythms (no synthesizers or drum machines here!) and words that ring true in your heart.
