Free Music Notes for Number Ones

Free Music Review: The Greatest
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not really a fan of pop music, rather R&B and Hip Hop but Michael Jackson is the one single artist who has changed popular music (every genre)for ever. Think about it - if it wasn't for MJ, most of the successful artists of today, your Justin Timberlake's, Britney Spears and basically every other pop star, as well as most black artists whom Michael paved the way for, for exposure in the mainstream and on MTV owes their career to the groundbreaking nature of everything this man did in the 1980s and early 1990s. This collection despite not really being a definitive collection of his best hits is nevertheless a collection of songs that would make almost any other artist on the planet mouth water and be envious of such a brilliant body of work. The DVD with all the performance in the videos really shows off why Michael Jackson was, is and will forever be the one and only true King of Pop....

Free Music Review: Ballad Friendly
Hit: 5 Stars

I was really into Michael Jackson's dance songs, but for some reason, I favored his slower cuts even more. My favorite song "Butterflies," which is not on this CD is why I never went over a month without listening to him, but it's songs like "Black or White," "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Man in the Mirror," and "Dirty Diana" that made me a fan by choice and not just because my mother played the hell out of every Jackson 5 CD and Michael Jackson CD she had. I really loved these songs. I just "Stranger in Moscow" was on here, and my collection would be complete. The "Thriller 25th Anniversary: The Book, Celebrating the Biggest Selling Album of All Time" CD offers some of his major songs, but I like this CD better because it has more of a variety of the songs he did.

Free Music Review: A Better Greatest Hits Collection
Hit: 5 Stars

First off, like Elvis did with his #1's cd, "Number Ones" is a compliation of MJ's #1 hits in both the UK and the US. The songs featured here that did not hit #1 in the US did so in England where he is still a HUGE star.

Unlike his recent HIStory Greatest Hits Vol. 1 package, these songs are the versions as they were released as singles, some slightly edited. All in all, it is a great collection that includes the great "Smooth Criminal" and "Dirty Diana" not included on the previous collection.

My only disappointment is that we were given an unecessary live version of "Ben" instead of another new song. I like "One More Chance" as it brings us back to the older, less harsh and more pop Michael Jackson.

Even if you already have all his CD's this is still a worthy CD to add to your collection.

Free Music Review: King of Pop
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the newest hits collection from the King of Pop, released due to contractual obligation. Even though everything but "One More Chance" is previously released material, this CD has to be judged based on the music. These are the songs that defined an era. "Billie Jean", "Beat It", and "Thriller" are three songs and videos that every pop artist today is still trying to duplicate. The "Bad" era is well reperesented, and the 90's are somewhat, although the number 1 R&B hit "Remember the Time" is missing. No big deal, if you own "Dangerous". Michael Jackson may never approach the level of success he once had, but he will always be the King of Pop.

Free Music Review: Not Exclusively Number Ones
Hit: 5 Stars

In the U.S., Michael Jackson had 13 post-Motown (solo era) number one hits. They were: Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Rock With Me, Billie Jean, Beat It, Say Say Say, We Are the World, I Just Can't Stop Loving You, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror, Dirty Diana, Black or White, and You Are Not Alone. Factoring in the U.K. chart, we can add Earth Song and Blood on the Dance Floor. But songs like Say Say Say, We Are the World and Blood on the Dance Floor are missing. Other songs, like Smooth Criminal and You Rock My World, weren't number one hits on either chart. Which chart was Sony using?
