Free Music Review: Wow.
Hit: 5 Stars

Michael McDonald's Motown CD is magnificent.

I have never owned any of his music until now -- I received this CD as a gift. But I have played it 3 times within the past couple days. The arrangements of these classic songs are fresh and up to date while staying true to their original spirit.

I really marvelled at Michael's voice and delivery. It's huskier now than I remember it being before and he sounds better than ever. He also interprets and phrases things in churchy and soulful ways that I don't ever recall hearing on his top 40 hits ...he even squalls a few times! Maybe I just didn't notice it then, but I notice it big-time on this set. I always knew Michael could sing, but on the strength of this one album I have a whole new respect for the talent of this man. Talk about giving depth to lyrics. "All Is Fair In Love" almost becomes a sermon when Michael sings it; you can tell he has lived it.

I would highly recommend adding this to your collection, especially if you like Motown's classics of the 60's and 70's. It's worth it! This CD is so soulful that I'd be willing to wager that Aretha gives her seal of approval to it...shoot, she may even own a copy! :-)

Free Music Review: Mike McD goes Motown!
Hit: 5 Stars

The ex-Doobie Brother and background vocalist for Steely Dan has planned several years ago to record some of his favorite Motown hits. This album is his biggest seller since his solo debut IF THAT'S WHAT IT TAKES was released in 1982. Yes,this album is on the Motown label. The clientele for the label was originally all black artists. The only other white artist who recorded on Motown that I know of is Bruce Willis(he first recorded on the label around 1986 or early '87). Michael McDonald covers hits recorded by the Supremes,Marvin Gaye,Stevie Wonder,The Miracles(when Smokey Robinson led the group),and The Stylistics. SIGNED,SEALED,DELIVERED,I'M YOURS was a hit for Wonder who co-wrote it. Then Peter Frampton covered it on his I'M IN YOU album. This album has been promoted in a couple of commercials for Verizon. Or is it AT & T or Sprint? In those commercials,McDonald is seen performing several songs from this album. He even mentioned in one about his daughter phoning him. After quitting the Doobie Brothers in the early 80's when the group disbanded and since then reformed,McDonald continues successfully pleasing his fans with his music including the material on this album.

Free Music Review: Amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD was just purchased and for Christmas *(early) it is SUPERB!
Michael Mcdonald, made a Cover album that matters and blows away others who have tried. Annie Lennox did it with "Medusa" and Cyndi Lauper tried with her latest "At Last" but failed.

There are stand out tunes (like "I Want You") a classic Marvin Gaye song.... beyond the best cover of that song to date.... I can go on and review every track but, they all are outstanding and are worthy of a 5 star rating ......... Every Cover is beyond what you'd expect. This album is AMAZING and a MUST for Motown lovers everywhere!

Add this to your collection this blew not only me, but my entire family away. It is in heavy rotation since it came in my home and will remain that way for a long time... You will be taking this one out over and over. It's a Keeper!

Mr. Mcdonald's voice has never sounded better!

5 Star CD all the way! What are you waiting for???? Go get "MOTOWN" NOW.... You won't be sorry!

Brilliant! Period!

Free Music Review: A Labor Of Love
Hit: 5 Stars

Michael McDonald's distinctive voice is perfect for covering soul standards from the golden era of Motown Records. Michael seems to have a special affinity with Stevie Wonder in particular, including "Higher Ground" on his best of compilation, as well as covering four of his songs on this collection. "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" sounds filled with so much spirit, including a call and response from the female backing singers, that it practically becomes a gospel number. "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" and "All In Love Is Fair" are outstanding love ballads, sung with an emotional intensity that stands out from the other songs. "Too High" is a bold choice for a closing song, with its overt drug references. The arrangement of the song is closer to jazz than soul, with Michael performing the vocal gymnastics with ease. In fact, all of the arrangements perfectly suit each song, with Michael's keyboards and vocals out in front of the mix, right where they belong.

Free Music Review: A real toe tapper! Great listening!
Hit: 5 Stars

Michael McDonald has always been a favourite singer of mine. His deep baritone voice from the Doobie Brothers hit "Takin It To The Streets" remains a favourite. So, when I started to hear his voice on the MCI commercials I got curious. Was this a one time thing or was an album in the making. As it turns out, it was the latter and I immediately went out and bought the CD. I wasn't disappointed. Now, when I leave the drive way in the morning I immediately turn on "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and it gets me totally excited about the day ahead.

I've recommended the CD to countless friends with different musical tastes and they've all loved it. With so much crap being made today from American Idol singers and the like, it's good to see a real talent being recognized.

With the exception of a few artists like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, who are in a class by themselves, most gifted artists of any era, do more than one thing well. Certainly, in MM's case it's singing and piano playing.

Buy the CD, you'll enjoy it!
