Free Music Notes for MotownFree Music Review: McD Cuts Loose Hit: 5 Stars
I've always been a huge Michael McDonald and I'm glad that he's hit the road as much as he has in the past four or five years (I've been able to see him at least once a year). "What a Fool Believes" remains an all-time favorite song (as well as summing up my youth) and "Our Love" was the song of choice for my wedding. My wife always cries at the first song he sings in concert, no matter which one he opens with.So while I'd probably recommend anything he does, I'm really excited about MOTOWN because I can see Michael's passion and enthusiasm for this music. They're true classics and Michael adds his own distinctive voice and sound to bring these songs to life again. During a "Regis & Kelli" appearance, Michael said he enjoyed this experience so much that he'd "produce five albums a year if they were this much fun." Here's hoping he does at least another volume for us.
Free Music Review: A much needed cd in your collection. Hit: 5 Stars
I tend to like many different types of music but it is awesome to hear this particular cd. I listen to everything but hard rock, but music like this is lacking in the music industry at this moment. Every talent has to have a demographic, sell to a broad fan base, get rotation on mtv and radio stations. Unfortunately some of our most talented musicians often get left without projects. We are extremely blessed to have the rich voice of Michael McDonald. You know from the first few notes that it is a rich voice that is unique to him. My only complaint (if you could call it that) would be that he should have brought other talent to do some duets or backround work. After watching his dvd a few weeks ago, Michael McDonald and Friends, I loved how he worked with some of the women in the duets. Anyway....for some nice soulful classics, pick this one up. You will not be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Still Great! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not a big fan of 'revivals' but I'm a big fan of Michael McDonald and Motown music. Michael and Motown... a great combination. It seems that Michael was born to sing the great songs of the Motown era... great renditions of Marvin, Stevie, etc. This guy still sings great and the quality of his voice is something else, truly original! Age has not affected his talent, in fact, it seems it imoproved it. Favorites are Heard it through the Grapevine, All in Love is Fair, Ain't No Mountain High and many more. The only thing I didn't like in this album was the 'drum programming'.... Michael, this isn't the 80's anymore! Drum Programming did the trick for you for Sweet Freedom, but not fot this one anymore. Still, it's still a great album. I recommend this one even if you don't like Michael or Motown - because it really is a good album. I hope Michael will continue to churn out albums.
Free Music Review: Suprisingly Good!!!! Done by someone who knows how... Hit: 5 Stars
With all the remakes and bad readings of classic pop material I had become jaded and cynical. So many bad takes of good material. Then comes this recording.
Michael McDonald does a wonderful job on many of these R&B classics. Not all were from the Motown catalog, many were from the Philadelphia Soul/Thom Bell catalog.
He bring enough of himself so that it's not just a tribute. He does a very good job of re-interpreting many of these pieces.
His voice hasn't lost anything. He has both the range and the power to tackle these pieces.
His readings are soulful and convincing. A ot of high points on this one.
"Aint' Nothin' Like The Real Thing", "I Want You", "Distant Lover", "Since I Lost My Baby" and "All In Love Is Fair" are true high points.
One of the better recordings of this kind.
