Barbra Streisand was on an incredible success streak in the late seventies, and she racked up another huge hit with Gold disco single "The Main Event/Fight" (#3 Pop, #5 Adult Contemporary) in summer of '79. As a film, THE MAIN EVENT had many shortcomings, but it was good fun and a pretty big box office hit. The soundtrack album is pretty much the same: the instrumentals and tracks by others are filler, and the whole disc only comes to life during Barbra's three (?!) renditions of the title song. The ballad and short (45 rpm) versions of the song are fun, but it's the full eleven-and-a-half minute extended version that really shines. The song (which is actually a medley of two separate songs) is a typically silly disco concoction, but Streisand's performance gives it an almost otherworldly power, with more impossibly big notes than one person can count. This bumps up the album's rating considerably, especially since this is the only place to get the long version. Just think of it as a maxi-single and not an actual album.
