Free Music Notes for Michel Plays PetruccianiFree Music Review: French genius Hit: 5 StarsSadly I didn't discover Michel Petrucciani until around the time of his death. Then I heard Trio in Tokoyo and worked my way through all his albums of the 1990's. All of them are excellent. Best of all is the truly amazing Eddy Louiss - Hammond Organ/Michel Petrucciani - Piano Conference de Presse a double CD of duets. Nothing will ever be as good as this.
Well ...plays Petrucciani is very close. From the storming opening two tracks to the end this is Jazz of the highest quality. In all honesty I've never heard Petrucciani play any better than he does here. The improvisations and ideas just flow out of him. It also helps to have a tremendous rhythm section. Here we get Roy Haynes and Al Foster on drums. Haynes played or recorded with Dizzy, Miles and Coltrane. Al Foster played with Miles in the 1970's and 1980's. Gary Peacock and Eddie Gomez are on bass (who play and played with Keithe Jarrett and Bill Evans respectively. John Abercrobie is on guitar for two tracks as well.
But it is the little man whose genius dominates proceedings. Not only from a playing point of view but because all the compositions are by him as well. He was a gifted writer as well as being a spectacular Pianist.
Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: my favorite michel as well Hit: 5 Starssadly we no longer have this brilliant and wonderful pianist with us . i loved all of his recordings . certainly none more so than this one . it came out at a time when the music industry was still pressing record albums . you had two different but equally stunning bass and drum rhythm sections on each side . additionally you have the magnificent john abercrombie sitting in on two songs . just really smoking , playful and delicate stuff . the blue note years were indeed very productive ones for michel . he reciprocated with one killin' project after another . what a genius .
Free Music Review: Deserves A Million Stars! Petrucciani At His Best! Hit: 5 Stars"Michel Plays Petrucciani" is a magical album. It seems all the musicians for this album were in the right place at the right time and really made a connection with each other. Not only are the pieces, which are all Petrucciani's, fantastic, but the interplay and high improvisational ability of all these musicians makes this album truly something special.
I was also surprised that John Abercrombie played on two songs. He's such a great player and he never sounded better than he does here. Although, Abercrombie is just on two songs, he turns in some of his finest playing on session. The other musicians are all just amazing and are big names in the world of jazz: Roy Haynes on drums, Gary Peacock or Eddie Gomez on bass, and of course John Abercrombie.
Petrucciani is incredible on piano as usual. He was a musician of such fine taste and class. He had such a beautiful lyricism to his playing. The most wonderful thing about Michel besides his musical gift is the fact that he overcame his disease all for his passion for jazz music. In spite of his condition, he become a jazz legend.
I recommend this album for fans of piano jazz, but also for Petrucciani fans. I would also check out his other work on Blue Note Records, Owl Records, and Dreyfus Records. All his albums are worth acquiring.
Free Music Review: As good as it gets Hit: 5 StarsI own 10 of Petrucciani's albums and this one is my most favorite. As you can conclude from the title, Petrucciani performs his own tunes and here we discover that he is not only a versatile pianist but a gifted composer as well. The all-star rhythm-section speaks for itself - Gary Peacock and Eddie Gomez on bass, Roy Haynes and Al Foster on drums plus guitarist John Abercrombie pops up on a couple of tracks. A very vivid and flamboyant album. If you love Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans but aren't familiar with Petrucciani, this is a perfect choice to dig into Michel's artistic genius.
