Michelle Branch is this year's best new artist.In an age when teenagers are seemingly (and unfortunately) puppets of the industry, churning out sugar pop and mimicking each other's style, it's refreshing to discover a truly talented young artist. Michelle is "only" 18, yet she outshines many female performers more than twice her age.
Michelle writes her own music, plays the guitar, and has one fantastic voice. With her surprisingly mature sound and hook-laden refrains, look for Michelle to quickly develop a large and diverse fan base, from teenagers to baby boomers.
I have over 500 CDs in my collection, ranging from Madonna, Depeche Mode, and Prince to Blink 182, Eve 6, and Outkast. I like all genres of music. Thus far, "The Spirit Room" is this year's biggest breakthrough and most consistent album; the CD has 11 potential singles. I rarely write reviews for Amazon, but could not resist spreading the word on this stunning disc.
Her first radio cut, "Everywhere," is beginning to gain radio exposure, and is featured in the film "American Pie II." It's infectious.
"All You Wanted" is my choice for the second single. Once again an amazing hook.
Other standouts include "You Set Me Free" (as close to the teen pop sound as she gets, while maintaining her integrity), "Something To Sleep To" (one part Fiona Apple, one part the Beatles), "If Only She Knew" (unique song structure), and "Drop in the Ocean" (displays her impressive vocal range).
Look for Michelle to be a critical and commercial favorite this summer and fall. I'll also predict she'll be nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys.
Yes, it's that good. Don't hesitate on this one.
