Free Music Review: Surprisingly masterful...

What a wonderful surprise! Oddly enough, even though I'm a Christian, I'm usually not into Christian music - so what a surprise it was for me when I listened to Michelle Tumes' CDs Listen and Center of My Universe. (I will be writing a review of the former album separate from this.) Not only has she talent; but she has a unique gift for being able to draw the listener in and allow you to be emmersed in the music. It's quite amazing to say the least.
As many who know me know, one thing I love is when an artist manages to cross and combine genres, making it work with ease. Here we see elements of pop, classical, folk, choirs, and more all tied in together with an etheral sound that seems almost out of this world. The music is non-intrusive, meaning you can listen to it at any time. It can be used for background music, to relax, or simply to send you off into the most peaceful sleep if you're feeling stressed out and can't close your eyes. In short, her music is peaceful and a wonder to listen to.
It's hard to describe the effect the songs have on a person - you really have to experience it for yourself if you're going to get the full effect. But I will try as best I can.
Center of My Universe begins with "Deep Love". Already the waves of music such the listener in before Michelle begins to sing. It gets stronger when the vocals come into the song, the instrumentals speed up slowly and by that point the song refuses to release you.
Track 2, "Heaven's Heart", continues the trend - with a poppish flair, snappy instrumentals, and a catchy chorus. I can't help wanting to get up and dance whenever I listen to this song. The song is pure beauty and you almost feel as if you're up near Heaven surrounded by beauty. I must confess, it's a favourite of mine.
"Heaven's Heart" leads into the ballad "Lovely". And it sure is. It will give one chills, as the soft waves of music soothe the listener. It revolves around God's immense love and also reveals the reasoning for the title of the CD. "You're the Center of My Universe," She sings softly. This I don't doubt. It is truely a lovely song.
"Do Ya" is a somewhat odd song because Michelle's singing style changes from the norm. She repeats "Do Ya, do ya, do ya love me?" in a combo of singing and speaking. The song is a bit out of place on the album; but nothing horrible by any means. It just seems a tad weak.
With the release of "Do Ya", "Immortal" is given to us, returning to the peaceful sound I love. The piano and soft drums accompany Michelle's singing. The result is another lovely ballad for us to enjoy. The message is how she views the immortality of God; but also about how we think of God as well. It turns out very nicely - the message and music is very strong.
"Missing You" is, of course, another beautiful piece of music. This one is almost nostalgic in a sense, referring to when we feel far away from Him and just want some peace in our lives. A great song to listen to if you want to relieve stress. It's one of my favourites on the album.
Another favourite, "With the Angels," soars . It takes you on a etheral journey. As Israel Button put it in the review above, "She sings, "I'm with the angels"--and one cannot doubt it." I'm inclined to agree. The song not only gives one chills; but you don't want the song to end. You don't want the beauty of the music to leave you.
"With the Angels" winds into "Chant". It's more mellow, in a hymn-like fashion with a choir Chant, of course. A nice addition to the CD. The violin especially adds a nice effect.
Track 9: "Christe Eleison (Christ Have Mercy)": oh, wow. This song is a powerhouse on the album. The song is faster paced, but keeps with a ballad-style at the same time. It's an incredible feat and the result is absolutely astounding. The verses are perfection and when the chorus arrives - it's almost like you're transported to another place, another world, while listening to it. I don't think words can describe this song.
The "I Wish for Peace" ballad rounds off the album. Naturally it's about her wish for peace in the world. A great finisher for the album.
I can definately say I'm quite impressed. What a wonderful album. Michelle Tumes has much talent. I sincerely hope that she makes music for many more years to come.
