Free Music Review: Excellent....But not as great as their first
Hit: 5 Stars

What do I love about bands? Well, the lyrics, the music, the beat, the harmony, the melody, this, that, and everything that describes the word 'music' are incorporated into Midtown's albums, but that is not the reason why they are awesome. Midtown is a band that has more talent than Blink 182 (btw, these guys have no talent; they were lucky), New Found Glory, Ataris, and most other mainstream bands. However, they have not gone mainstream themselves. This is the single most important part about this band. They are so much better than all these 'sell out' bands, as I call them, but yet they have managed to only produce music for those that love their music, not those that listen to it for an increase in their 'coolness'. Therefore, all of you teenie boppers reading this review should keep in mind that Midtown is for the true fans, not the fake-as-makeup kids with 'demand for popularity' written on their foreheads.

Now, back to the new album. I hate to brag, but I think that I have listened to this album more than any other person. Because I live in Paris (I am not French, however), the exported items are brought in earlier. Because the French have no understanding or respect for time, I recieved the CD four days before it came out in the States and have been listening to it since. And I must say, I am impressed.

These guys have been my favorite band ever since 'Save the World, Lose the Girl' came out. Following them for years, I have been waiting for this album with eagerness and curiosity. I knew that it wouldn't be as great as their first album, but after listening to it, it comes pretty darn close to being perfect. I am not going to go through every song and point out the strengths and weaknesses, but I will give an overall summary.

Firstly, the CD incorporates the Midtown genre of songs: ballads, emo rock, punk, flowing melody, and just about everything that makes a punk band a great band. With Tyler, Heath, Rob, and Gabe in the studio, this piece of work is impressive. The lyrics range from hate to determination to anger to forgiveness to living in general. Their guitar solos, although not as great as their first album, are catchy and pleasant to the ear. Also, the fact that all three of them sing in almost all the songs brings an element of unity and the element of pleasantness to the ear.

The 'best' songs, if you can call them that (or the songs that have the most impact on me) is 'Like A Movie' and 'One Last Time'. 'Like A Movie' is extremely catchy and although it has moved a little towards the pop-line, it is still Midtownish enough to be considered one of their better songs. Also, the lyrics of this song are excellent. However, nothing compares to 'One Last Time'. This amazing song just blew me away. The lyrics, the pace, the melody, the guitars, and especially the diversity of the song are amazing. I emphasize and stress the important of diversity because while some parts of the song are high pitched, others are low and while some parts are fast, others are slow. This song is, without question, the best song on the album.

There are, however, a few flaws. The first and most significant is the song 'Get It Together' was rerecorded and it sounds terrible compared to the Warped Tour 2001 version. Another flaw is that Gade, one of the members, wrote the majority of the songs and this leaves out Heath and Tyler (who is the most talented) somewhat out of the picture. However, that is irrelevant to the album and these few flaws do not ruin the CD. Although not better than their first album, this album is excellent, much better than my expectations. I am just so joyful that these guys haven't sold out yet. However, I have a feeling that they will sometime in the future. But not for now.
