Free Music Review: The album gets better and better
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard the track "Lollipop" at work on a day when things were not going well, the song lifted up my whole day. Later I looked up MIKA and listened to samples of other tracks. This is usually the point where one discovers an album with one or two "good" tracks and a dozen filler tracks, not so here. It got better and better the more I listened. Musically, the sound does resemble Scissor Sisters, Queen, Harry Nilsson, even a bit of Chicago and Leo Sayer, which is fine because that sound worked in the 1970's and it works now.
The cover and insert art is based on work by both MIKA and his sister Yasmine (DaWack). The comprehensive liner notes show that MIKA's sisters Zuleika and Paloma have sung backup on a couple of tracks, and that MIKA is unafraid to use novelties like spoon orchestras in his work.
Music critics either love MIKA or love to hate him as an artist, calling his work derivative, calling him a cynic, claim he is exploiting the Penniman family friend Raffa Kobeisi's story on a spoken word track on the CD, etc. Forget about all of it, just go with the music, it's worth it.

Free Music Review: Mika
Hit: 5 Stars

Mika should get more radio play in the US so that everyone can enjoy his unique voice and fabulous vocal range. Nominated for a Grammy for Love Today, the big hit worldwide was 'Grace Kelly', actually a far superior song, soaring through three octaves and coveying Mika's frustration at trying to get a recording deal. The American's don't seem to understand the true meaning of the song. He doesn't want to be like Grace Kelly, he is saying, what else can I try to make you (the music executive)like what I do?
ie: he's run out of ideas! Never mind, because this album has sold almost six million copies wordwide and Mika sells out concert halls everywhere he goes and the audience all seem to be able to sing along to the wonderful Grace Kelly, and leave the concert in a very happy mood indeed. The US version of this cd has the sublime track 'Erase', a perfect radio track if ever there was one! It is not on the UK version, so American's are blessed to be able to purchase a trully wonderful and diverse cd.
With talent and exceptional good looks Mika should be a much bigger hit Stateside!

Free Music Review: This is a great lollipop to suck on
Hit: 5 Stars

Where as MIKA been all my life. This album is in a category all its own. Musically it's just impossible to describe the beautiful laid tracks that support MIKA's also talent as a vocalist.

This album is alternative in that it encompasses more than your average pop music. MIKA, who has declared his self bisexual, brings his sexuality to this album. Not in an overbearing way, but clearly when you hear the album you know this is an album by someone who is comfortable opening many doors and exposing themselves to be criticized by their musical talent.

Listen to the track "Bill Brown" to get a further understanding of MIKA's ability to encompass a world that usually stays behind closed doors. "Grace Kelly" is a pop hit, and falls in the lines of the other tracks on the album, but has a greater appeal to others who will only hear the one single. "Lollipop" is a fun track with a super catchy tune, this is playful and cute!

MIKA scores two thumbs up for this album. I look forward to listening to his follow up album which was recently released.

Free Music Review: a very welcome fresh voice!
Hit: 5 Stars

This guy's voice is amazing! If you miss the days when male singers were really singers and not some pop-image being marketed to 12 year-olds, you will really enjoy Life In Cartoon motion. The last decade of Pop music, especially here in the states, has been so uninventive, predictable, and dull --particularly in the male vocalist genere. I had forgotten what it was like to hear an album free of over-sung boy-bandish sappy ballads and/or whiny 'unplugged' misery-songs. Mika's Life in Cartoon Motion is a welcome breath of fresh air and I would venture to say he one of the best all-around artists to come along in a very VERY long time. If you loved Prince, George Michael, Freddy Mercury, Elton John, or Michael Jackson when they were at the top of their game you will really appreciate this guy's voice and song-writing. Mika's range is remarkable and his ability to sing with a flamboyant-abandon but still be in control is nothing short of fabulous! It is easily one of the best albums I have bought in the last five years.
