Free Music Review: I Just Love this Album
Hit: 5 Stars

Mike Doughty has continued over the years putting out his own solo albums after his band Soul Coughing broke up. He has toured steadily and sold his solo material on homemade CD-R's. You have to give him credit for that alone. So he has gone to being in a full band with Soul Coughing to a solo more acoustic type of sound, then now with this release back to a more "full" band sound.

He adds more instruments in songs like "Nectarine (part one)" especially adding tinkling keys, funkier bass tones and assorted effects, giving the album a different sound than what you'd expect from Doughty and Soul Coughing. Yes it does have his trademark vocals that are on the nasal-y side, which I happen to love, but the change in vibe is kinda nice. It is a good background music album to put on, which is what I did with his solo albums.

Mike Doughty can still write memorable lyrics along with solid hooks, which can be seen with every song on this album. I can especially see girls dancing when he sings "I just want the girl in the blue dress to keep on dancing..." in all the clubs. With this album he has greatly enhanced his song writing reputation.

Free Music Review: Mike Doughty-Golden Delicious
Hit: 5 Stars

I ordered this cd for a friend whose name is Jennifer in light of the "27 Jennifers" song. I LOVED THE ENTIRE CD. Mike Doughty is a very talented singer/song-writer. I'm very impressed and highly recommend this CD to anyone looking for something new and something good!

Free Music Review: Extremely Disappointing
Hit: 4 Stars

Why would someone give a CD 4 stars and title their review "Extremely Disappointing"? Let me explain. I was never much of a Soul Coughing Fan. They had a few great songs in between a lot of filler. So I was amazed when I first heard Skittish in 2003 and felt it was the best cd released in that year. There was such a freshness to stripped down Doughty. He then release Rockity Roll which continued in a 5 star vein. Both these discs were almost underground, so it was not a huge surprise when he remixed and re-released them in 2005 as a double disc. Haughty Melodic was released about a year or so later and it was slightly weaker than its predecessors. Golden Delicious continues the downward trend. I mean this seems like it contains the 27th version of 27 Jennifers. It is still better than his work during the Soul Coughing years. But look, here is the deal. The best cut on this disc is arguably the aforementioned 27 Jennifers, and it pales in comparison to his version on Rockity Roll. I am not the kind of guy that normally criticizes a band for adding more production to their work as their career progresses. (I am thinking of two favorites of mine The Mountain Goats and Talking Heads who added a lot to their production in their later works and whose early fans are often critical of what I think is actually an improvement.)But in Doughty's case I am one of those bitchy early fans of his solo work. This is a giant step backward. Still a pretty good disc, but a true disappointment in light of his other solo work. In Doughty's case more than any other artist I can think of, less is more.

Free Music Review: Another Doughty Great
Hit: 5 Stars

Golden Delicious did not dissappoint. There will be immediate favorites amongst the tracks. However, like any great album, you will discover new favorites the more you listen.

Free Music Review: Another treat from Mike Doughty.
Hit: 5 Stars

Mike Doughty has once again shown that he is a terrific song-writer and musician. He continues to impress with excellent songs like Navigating the Stars at Night, I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress to Keep on Dancing and a nice update of 27 Jennifers. Golden Delicious Golden Delicious may not pack the punch of Haughty Melodic Haughty Melodic, but it is a very solid effort. It is obvious that the former frontman for Soul Coughing has a lot more great music in him.
