Free Music Notes for AmarokFree Music Review: Gets better every time you listen to it!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This could almost be titled "Themes In Search Of An Album". At first listen, "Amarok" sounds like nothing more than an hour's collection of 10-second long bits, but each time I listened to it, it became more and more coherent. After repeated listenings, I consider it probably Oldfield's finest effort. Released at a time when "pop music" was going the mass production, "style over substance" route, this CD seems to be Oldfield's way of saying "up yours" to those who probably wanted a much more commercial effort from him, and music fans are much the better for it. Don't give up on this album after only one listen, or two, or even three. Give it time to grow on you, and you'll be glad you did.
Free Music Review: Still Amazing After 18 Years Hit: 5 Stars
This isn't a symphonic album. This isn't a groove album. This isn't a pop album. This isn't easy-listening background music. This is Mike Oldfield at his bravest, funnest, most confident, and most inventive. Originally conceived as a sequel to OMMADAWN, many years before, AMAROK bears a few similarities to that album but for the most part strikes out on its own. And while limitations of the vinyl and tape formats split OMMADAWN into two pieces, AMAROK gives us a solid hour of music, with rising and falling moods, complex exploration, and stunning musicianship. One of Oldfield's top albums, if not the top, right up there with OMMADAWN, MUSIC OF THE SPHERES, and TUBULAR BELLS (the original).
Free Music Review: Happy? Hit: 5 Stars
After a few lackluster vocal-oriented releases, Mike came back with a renewed spirit when he released this CD. Harkening back to his earliest instrumental/rock symphonic works, Amarok is for those who love the concept of Tubular Bells. Ommadawn was my favorite Mike Oldfield CD until I heard Amarok. Amarok is truly original, inspired, creative, different, and challenging. Sound effects, spoken words, and those unique sounds he gets out of his guitars all add to the mystic feeling of this work. This is a celebration of life! And it is still my favorite Mike Oldfield CD.
Free Music Review: His best...but beware!!! Hit: 5 Stars
AMAROK is the most strangest and hauntings of all of oldfields cd's It is 60 minutes long suite with a lot of diffrent styles and powerfull electric guitars. you may ask : WHY STRANGE? Sounds of toys,Teethbrushing,Flamenco strumming and face punches. Scary and haunting choirs The theme is changing each two minutesYou should listen to it only when you are in mood, otherwise you won't appereciate the beauty of it.this is the last "big" album of Oldfield. He never done anything simmilar later, but i still hope he will....
Free Music Review: Fantastic Hit: 5 Stars
Came to this having only heard the earlier Mike Oldfield stuff (Tubular Bells, Ommadawn etc), and at first I was a little ... surprised by the apparent chaos. But after a few listens, I realized this is just wonderful; it shows how much sophisticated Mr Oldfield has become in his understanding of music. It will take me a lot more times to even start to understand it, which is just what I want from music.
I find it hard to understand how anybody could not love this if they were to just listen to it 3 times.
