Free Music Review: Mike Oldfield...New Light Thru Old Shades

I have listened to Mike since I was 12 along with a lot of other 40 yr olds around the globe, seen him live, both at TBll and TBlll gigs and many concert venues home and abroad, worked on his 2nd video in the 80's at Virgin Vision, had a good laugh at one of RB's stately home Virgin staff parties, excellent bloke and not at all as quiet and insular as I thought he might be when I read about him as a kid.
He even made me a cuppa tea at Little Halings back in the old days the decent chap.
So perhaps I am a little biased about his music because he provided the soundtrack to my traumatic childhood and beyond.
So it was with dismay that after TBll things went down hill, the odd moment of musical genius caught in certain tracks on various albums and to be frank, I kinda gave up with his stuff because his early recordings not only provided me with a world to immerse myself away from the troubles of young life, but also were the first albums I learned to play along with and now record myself albeit privately.
So in 2005 along comes L&S and once again, shove it in the CD player and lo...another Fruity Loops drum track kicks in with sampled software, Vocaloid snatches and Neve Flying Fader EQ'd PRS paying the occasional visit...what the f....????

All you folks who are moaning about it not having enough grrrrrand pianos, bells and double speed guitar's and bloody whistles, get a grip, ok, so he's no Techno producer, but I can guarantee that the music you are referring to is actually about as close to real Techno as I am to marrying Charlotte Church! So don't come the `muso reviewer' to us other folks who `do' know proper GERMAN Techno ( I'm English and I'm not explaining, true Techno is now best gotten from our old war friends)
Sure its got more loops than a bowl of well......Honey Nut Loops, but so what, you gotta speculate to accumulate....
If he churned out the same 40 minute intricate fret work every two years then what is he doing?...growing?...progressing?...no...he'd then be criticiced for being repetitive and boring..he cant win.
This album is a kicking bit of Trancey/Oldfieldy/Chill Out/ Ethereal/ Mood music...a few good drum loops take it into a new arena and for god's sake, listen to LAKME end of album 2 to get the hairs on the back of your neck to rise when the full drum and bass lines kick in with the famous BA music ......Mike....well done.....it's different, sure, it's varied, fair enough, its sampled/looped/fruitylooped and I couldn't care less, it's fantastic and well worth the wait.
Perhaps one of the best albums from one of Britains best and probably first exponent of truly `different' music outputs.
Keep the G5 Mike, keep the FL Studios and keep the PRS, Keep the faith and ignore the philistine boring `where's TB4?' moaners, this album has some classic riffs, brilliant beats and still has that distinctive Oldfield nylon on steel trademark howling flying eq'd guits aplenty, yeah it's a step out of touch with bang up to date dance grooves but who wants to sound like every one else...I have the same gear as you and have taught myself to play keys , bass and guits so I could jam along with your stuff and still can't do it, because you have an inate gift with the `sound' not the notes...that I cant do so it's a pleasure to hear it and a pleasure for my little Golf Tdi to have it's doors blown off by the production values bashed into the album.....
Excellent album and a double for me trouble...
