Free Music Review: Master of the Spheres!!!...
Hit: 5 Stars

I agree with most of the reviews found on the web. This time it is a Classical type of music form the Virtuoso Mike Oldfield. It is another orchestral work from him. "Incantations" has been one of my favorite works from Mike Oldfield. Now it is Music of the Spheres. Great work!!!!!. Definitely a great work from the Master of all Spheres.

Eso es "Music of the Spheres".

The Songs of Distant Earth"?.

Felicidades a Mike Oldfield por otra gran joya musical!!. Hats off!!!.

Free Music Review: A Masterwork
Hit: 5 Stars

This album immediately separates itself from the rest of the MO discography because it is truly in the classical genre. Being so, the amazing thing I experienced was that I could still tell that it carried the distinctive Mike Oldfield musical "stamp." This showed me that Mike has truly succeeded in creating his own identifiable sound, regardless of genre.

I found the work to be highly enjoyable, profoundly moving and emotionally stirring. Mike has always had the ability to make music sing; to take us on a musical journey that crescendos, then receeds, bending and pulsing as it fills the heart, never the mind - THIS IS MUSIC TO FEEL DEEP DOWN IN YOUR SOUL.

I was not bothered by the initial musical reference to the Tubular Bells theme. To those who it bothers - get over it! It was worked in perfectly and expanded so as to feel new again and fresh. I feel that this work fits in easily and justifiably with his other "masterworks" - namely Tubular Bells, Ommadawn, Incantations, Tubular Bells II & Songs of Distant Earth. Music of the Spheres now joins this select group for me. All of these works have the touch of genius and mastery and elevate Mr. Oldfield to a lofty position in field of modern music.

From here - where? Who knows. Have we ever been able to predict Mike's next musical step? No - he is his own man and has earned the right to be so. All we can do is be grateful for whatever else he graces us with during his time on this earth.

Free Music Review: for the movie in your mind
Hit: 5 Stars

The sad element here is that this majestic piece of musical artistry will go largely ignored in the U.S. Mike Oldfield has created an expansive and inspirational work of great impact here. My first listen was in my car where I was struck by the tone and range of the work. At home, through my surround system (hey, why no 5.1 release???), the music naturally came fully to life and elicited many emotions and feelings. Oddly enough, at times I felt I was hearing the score to an epic film, yet one with quiet and contemplative moments. This is music with purpose, context, and meaning. If Tubular Bells was the prologue, this, then, is the masterwork. I will be buying more than a few copies for my friends.

Mr. Oldfield should "hook-up" with P.B.S. to present this work to a wider audience which may not be aware of its availability (although I could not find it in any store in the hinterland of Pittsburgh) and accessibility (for mature and focused listening pleasure). If P.B.S. can elevate "Celtic Woman" and other third rate warblers to big-seller-status, surely the same promotional effort can be put forth to genius.

Thanks, Mike, for an essential piece of music for the 21st century!!

Free Music Review: Geniuses still exist
Hit: 5 Stars

They may miss on occasion, but Mike Oldfield (like Bob Dylan, at 65+) can still achieve the sublime. The two items with which I've begun to compare MUSIC OF THE SPHERES are Carl Orff's CARMINA BURANA and, much more recently, Ian Anderson's DIVINITIES. Oldfield's album arguably surpasses theirs. Certainly he had less help than Anderson, who had Andrew Giddings as cohort. Some reviewers are saying SPHERES should be given a play on PBS. I say he deserves better somehow, especially after years of genuinely outstanding output (yes, including his pop-rock records like the fun and galvanizing EARTH MOVING). But if DIVINITIES made the classical charts, this latest by Mike Oldfield should be there right now! Two more things: (1) Never has its creator shaped and interweaved the basic Tubular Bells opening theme to such subtle effect as in this most recent gift to us; and (2) "On my Heart" has to be one of the top 5 melancholic-bliss melodies ever. I think that's what Mike wants, what he sacrifices for, and if I could I'd do more than shake his hand, I'd probably kiss it.

Free Music Review: GORGEOUS ETHEREAL MUSIC-OLDFIELD'S LATTER DAY CLASSIC
Hit: 5 Stars

This is some of the best music that Mike Oldfield has ever put out. Being a big fan of the TUBULAR BELLS Trilogy, it's nice to hear a bit of that style coming through on "Harbinger", the opening track. The remaining songs are gorgeous mixes of classical and new age, the latter a genre that Oldfield helped pioneer. Whilst there are prog-rock touches on this album, it's all done with subtlety and delicate touches, it's not overblown or pompous. And being a Kiwi, I'm delighted that he chose Hayley Westenra, from my hometown, to sing on "On My Heart". This album is almost like a forgotten soundtrack to a movie, one wonders why Oldfield doesn't do more soundtrack work, this is better in my estimation than, say, Vangelis, it's very accessible without being sappy. I've enjoyed several of the more recent Oldfield albums, particularly Tres Lunas and Light And Shade, Oldfield has been pretty consistent in the last few years. Here's hoping he can maintain the creative spark that he's certainly shown on this album. Recommended
