Free Music Notes for Ommadawn

Free Music Review: "Ommadawn" is a Masterpiece and the best of all his albums!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was hooked on Mike Oldfield when I first listened to "Tubular Bells" in 1972. I purchased each album in succession until after "Ommadawn." I loved "Hergest Ridge", but when I purchased "Ommadawn", Mike Oldfield became my idol. This masterful recording is put together so well, building up themes and variations, sending you through a journey with climaxes that are unbeatable. Ever since this album, I have been looking for one like this one. "Songs of Distant Earth" is the only album that is a close second to "Ommadawn." Thank God that a CD of "Ommadawn" was produced because I wore out two LP's throughout the years of continually listening to the album. I can honestly say that I have listened to "Ommadawn" over 200 times and I am not tired of it! Now I am inspiring my music students to Mike Oldfield by example of this album and others. I am still looking for another album like it. I do think that with the evolution of New Age Music, there will be a large clientele for it!

Free Music Review: Ommadawn is eternal....
Hit: 5 Stars

For the few of us who were or are aware of Mike Oldfield at all...this classic is a staple for any listener of his music.

Don't be fooled by the supposed African drummers on this...this reeks of total Celtic music. Hergest Ridge is, in my opinion, a langoured effort at Tubular Bells, Part II, this music here...is quite original and most refreshful.

The haunting cover alone with the still face showing through a rain streaked window should be a clue in itself. This musician is growing...and looking into the inner self to express himself musically.

I could be a real critic here and point out certain key factors in this masterpiece...but...since this flows from start to finish...that would be rude.

If you want to hear somone come off as subtle as a slegehammer banging into the sand...this must be heard. Released at a time when Art Rock was en vogue...this truly was the herald of them all.

Truly haunting and a good listen to when you are alone and in the mood to be surrounded by beauty, this is a welcome relief to the chaos that surrounds us.

Free Music Review: Required Listening
Hit: 5 Stars

It should be a law -- all human beings should have to listen to Part 1 of "Ommadawn" at least once in their lives. Real emotion, real musical idea development, real imagination, and really being moved am I by this 3rd release by Master Oldfield!

I put this album on and I am transported to midnight moors, soft spring hills, elegant mansions that dissolve into swirling stars that dissolve into mad passionate dancing by the firelight in the middle of the desert...the transcendant sounds tickle and trickle and then break my heart with their beauty and then build up and into my heart with their spiritual strength until I ask myself, or anyone, "Is this what music would sound like if made by the Divine?"

I don't mean to sound trite in my praise for this recording, but when something reaches into you and grabs you by the loins and makes full love to your ears and Soul at the same time, believe me, you take notice. Please buy this music if you want to feel the magic again...it does exist beyond these gates...

Free Music Review: A Musical Genius alive in our time
Hit: 5 Stars

25 years down the road, Ommadawn leaps out of my speakers with a confidence, clarity and freshness that continues to amaze me every time I "listen" to it. I put "listen" in quotes because Ommadawn does to me what every favorite piece of music I own does: it totally engages me so that I am transported to another world. In this world of Oldfield magic the line between music and life becomes blurred; Am I listening to the music or have I simply and finally woken up to LIFE?

Rather than describing the music, let me describe its effect on me: Ommadawn...like great food...transcendant sex...scintillating conversation...refreshing walks outdoors...sacred silent times alone with your thoughts - like all of these, it TRULY SATISFIES down to the core. After each "listening" I stand humbled, eternally grateful, and nothing can stop this rising, bubbling JOY inside my heart that screams: "I HAVE TRULY LIVED!" I have found no greater feeling in this life - and all for a measly $15 or so!

Free Music Review: "OmmaGawd!"
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard of "Ommadawn", I'd already become somewhat familiar with "Tubular Bells" from the "Exorcist" ... just about everyone was playing "Bells", and as great as THAT album is, I found myself tiring of it. One day, while seated in a waiting room, I picked up a copy of "Stereo Review" magazine and happened upon the review for "Ommadawn", which was a new release at that time. The review itself didn't impress me, since sometimes a reviewer may resort to undeserved hyperbole when describing the work of a favored artist. What DID stick with me, though, was the phrase "Ommagawd!!". As a result of that, upon my next visit to a record store (remember those?), I saw "Ommadawn" on the rack, took a chance, and purchased it. This was the single BEST purchase I've EVER made of ANY recording. If you are an Oldfield neophyte, THIS is the album to start with!
