Free Music Notes for OmmadawnFree Music Review: Remarkable Hit: 5 Stars
Of Oldfield's early period of composition, this is the standout piece. Keep in mind the youth of the composer, who, at 17 composed Hergest Ridge and at 18 Tubular Bells (They were released in reverse order)now started to achieve a mature style with Ommadawn. The composition is built around four themes in the manner of a classical symphony. The third section with bagpipe solo by the Chieftains' Paddy Maloney is worth the price of the album alone. If you have never heard this man's work, I would urge you to start with this cd. Oldfield, IMHO went through a major transition following the release of this album and only occasionally produced anything approaching its brilliance thereafter.
Free Music Review: Ommadawn, or best Mike's 15 minutes ever!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Why is Mike going so commercial lately?. We want more of those powerful tracks he made in the seventies. It's OK to change with the times but, what would Ommadawn's part 1 be if it had been composed in 2000?. I'm sure it wouldn't be kind of a Tubular Bells III. Don't you take me wrong: I've got nothing against late Mike's recordings, but they're becoming, in my opinion, more "polite" than the old 70's ones. "Ommadawn part 1" should come back nowadays in the form of a club anthem or something like that!!. I'm sure you get what I mean: a real expression for deep feelings in XXI century, far from ephemeral, but ready to become a new classic, as Ommadawn was when first released.
Free Music Review: A masterpiece of sound and spirit Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard Ommadawn when I was in college, maybe age 19. Now, 24 years later, I still find it one of the most affecting, soulful, beautiful and inspiring pieces of music I've ever heard (especially side 1). It's the sort of thing I used to lie in my dorm room with my girlfriend of the time and listen to with the lights out. How to describe it: a cosmic, atavistic, almost tribal hymn; a chorus to this world and every other, a play of the gods, a dance of angels... I could go on, and maybe I would start to sound kind of silly or corny, but it's all true. If you want to hear music that can really affect you, this is it. It is timeless.
Free Music Review: The best of the best! Hit: 5 Stars
Out of all of Oldfield's many releases (...and there are quite a few, folks!), this is by and far the absolute best of the best! Falling right within the conceptual line of the "Tubular Bells" series releases (i.e., one song per side on vinyl or cassette), this music upon first listen is simply breath-taking! Listening to it as a music-loving teenager, it left a very delible impression upon my psyche and still "kicks" today. So...I highly recommend this Oldfield release to ANYONE who's interested in hearing his unique music for the first time. (Trust me! You WON'T be disappointed!!)
Free Music Review: Simply haunting Hit: 5 Stars
This is a beautifully composed piece of music. It's very difficult to put into words what it is. If you are a sensitive soul and like what is now known as 'new age' music, then I feelOmmadawn would certainly be a worth while purchase. It is very English. Delicate. Strong. Like rain on a May morning or fluffy clouds over a field of lambs, (sorry, I am getting silly now). You get the idea though? From the very first melody the atmosphere is simply haunting. It's very easy to say that this album is boring. It's also easy to say Shakespeare is boring. You decide.
