Free Music Notes for Q.E.2.

Free Music Review: One of the best EVER
Hit: 5 Stars

Mike Oldfield is surely one of the most gifted and talented artists of our time. This album shines as one of his very best. Note for fans: Phil Collins makes a guest appearance as drummer!

Free Music Review: Very fine album
Hit: 4 Stars

Sounds like instrumental progressive rock. Sound throught the album is a little bit thin but otherwise production work is very fine and I like those real horns (which were replaced by synths in next album).

One thing bugs me in this album: I don't personally like idea of Mike covering Abba & Shadows. I think those cover songs should have been published as singles. Albums should have Mike's own stuff or traditionals. However, Mike's versions of these songs are very fine. Shadows responded to Mike by covering Moonlight Shadow some years later.

Just like two other instrumental albums relased in 1980 (namely Tangerine Dream's Tangram and Jarre's Magnetic Fields) this albums features vocoder. That's OK, since I've always been a fan of vocoder sound.

Mike's own compositions are nice. The highlights are title track and Celt. Title track QE2 is one of my favorite songs. The second half of it has so catchy melody and sound...
Also the second half of Taurus I is funny.

Often good music is not commercially so succesful but
this album reached no.1 spot in German album charts. Nice.

Free Music Review: AS AMAZING AS MOZART
Hit: 4 Stars

In fact, really, Mike is probably the Mozart of his generation. Now, I would give it 5 stars except "Mirage" I find not up to the standard of the other, more mellifluous, pieces (TUBULAR BELLS 2, on the other hand, is consistent throughout). I truly can't say enough about "Arrival"--every good-music compilation I make for people seems to include it as the final track, a sweet send-off. It is so sublime! An indication of the strength of Oldfield: Sadly, I came to associate "Wonderful Land" with the depression of breaks with my girlfriend. How would I know that a year or so later the song would come gently back and woo me into the purity it wanted all along, apart from my memories? But it did... "QE2" and "Celt" are jubilant and adventurous. I would never, ever be content to record THIS CD! Get it, please!

Free Music Review: QE2
Hit: 4 Stars

QE2 being Oldfield's 1980 release and his 6th studio album and contains tracks both by Oldfield himself and cover of other groups, i.e., Abba and the Shadows. These covers being "Arrival" by Abba and "Wondeful land" by the Shadows. The album did very well and topped the charts in Germany. The booklet has fine linernotes by Dave Laing in which he describes the album and how fared when it was released. We also get a nice list of whom and what they play on every track. 4/5.

Free Music Review: General
Hit: 4 Stars

I often find myself putting this on when I just want to here Mike Oldfield. I haven't yet replaced it with a CD but I may soon be force to. I would very much regret the loss of an old friend. - doug
