Free Music Notes for Tres Lunas (Bonus CD)Free Music Review: You Just Can't Put Mike's Style in a Box Hit: 4 Stars
Just when you think you've heard Mike's full range of musical styles, along comes Tres Lunas. This is not Voyager or any of the TB series, Millenium Bell or Distant Earth and certainly nowhere near an Amarok or Incantations-type piece. There is music to chill out to, some techno, and music to rock on with (title cut and Turtle Island). For the die-hard Mike fan, such as myself, there is plenty of guitar on this CD to satisfy. I haven't figured out the MusicVR DVD game that comes with the Music CD, my wife has and enjoys it about as much as she does the music. The only reason this CD gets 4 stars from me rather than 5 is the inclusion of a Salley Oldfield tune ("To Be Free", must be real popular in Europe), not once but twice. Both versions are essentially identical. I'm just having trouble with a Mike Oldfield CD that is used as a vehicle to boost Salley's career. This CD is a must for the Mike Oldfield afficianado and is a good selection for introducing Mike to the Mike neophyte. If it sounds uunusual and not quite like Mike on first listen, give it a second chance and you're either hooked or dissappointed, depending on your expectations. like I said, you can't put Mike in a box. Get it and Enjoy.
Free Music Review: Back to Planet Oldfield... Hit: 4 Stars
Alright. I know there have been many people who don't quite know what to make of this album. But as a lifelong fan, and one who was hellishly disappointed in the over-commercialized hype and hoopla surrounding the much vaunted Millennium set (where the hell were the bloody guitars!?), I was relieved and gratified to see old Mike finally getting back into the studio and flying off into his own world. Which is where I feel most of his best music comes from. Especially when it sounds as if he was having a great deal of fun creating it. And thank you God, the electric guitar returns with a vengeance. So, it's a chill out album. So effing what? I myself would be a touch worried about the man if he brought us Amarok every single year. Good, no, great return to form. Atmospherics, brilliant tunes, marvelous production, and hardly an irritating rap or turntable scratch break in evidence...welcome back Mike, me old mucker, it's good to have you among the living once again.
Free Music Review: "Chill Out" an accurate description for this Ambient work Hit: 4 Stars
I downloaded the demo version of Music VR when it came out. I liked the catchy sound loops that pervaded it, and thought that it was like being inside an interactive video for Mike Oldfield. When the album came out, I was hoping for more of the same kind of music, without the awkward looping. I was not disappointed. This reminds me of a more mellow Songs of Distant Earth, and you can firmly place the whole thing in the Ambient section, right along side Vangelis. There isn't too much that stuck with me, aside from the impression that I liked it. I agree it is not the best of his work, but head and shoulders above Heaven's Open or even Guitars. The Music VR game is great fun, but I wish someone would put out a guide for it. If you have a lot of time to wait and explore, this is a lot of time-wasting fun. I can only imagine the fun it would be in an "altered state of mind."
Free Music Review: Pretty average for Mike - which still rates 4 stars... Hit: 4 Stars
Mike doesn't appear to be breaking any new ground here (which, after all the new ground he's broken in the past, is ok with me). The CD moves along nicely, with no real outstanding tracks to catch your attention. I would compare this outing to be better than "Guitars", but not as good as "Millennium Bell". The only disappointment I have is that it took Mike 3 years to come out with a disc that, while pleasant to listen to, is really nothing special (at least for Mike's high standards of music). One last item; this CD has a highly polished piece of engineering behind it. As usual for Mr. Oldfield, the music tracks are so professional laid down, that it's amazing more people don't seek Mike out just for his skills in the booth.
Free Music Review: Good work Hit: 4 Stars
It is hard for me to write the first review to this material, so I'll be short: This is not Amarok or TB II, but more than Platinum or Crises. Between the two. Good, but sometimes leaves the feeling that something should come. For Oldfield-fans, it is a must, and still enjoyable for newcomers also. It is something like The Songs of distant earth, with many electronic beats, but not so complex like that one. Still, no bad tracks at all. Buy it!
