Free Music Notes for Tres LunasFree Music Review: big step down from his previous works Hit: 2 Starsthis is synthetic and boring instrumental music with horrible Saxophone (as somebody mentioned too before) and lakc of good ideas.the only songs that are reminding of what Oldfield did the best few years ago are "return to Origin" and title track which have charming guitar riffs and are relaxing.the rest (and the PC game as well) are only an unoriginal and repeating new-age stuff that everyone could do on their own Computer. this is not what should be expected from Mike Oldfield 2 stars for "return to origin" (really good song)
Free Music Review: Sax used as a sonic torture Hit: 1 StarsI personally don't like sax sound much, but on the opening track 'Misty' the sax sound becomes a real torture to the ear. Didn't anyone, before releasing the album warn Mr. Oldfield about the HORRIBLE sax sound ? Or does Mr. Oldfield making a joke to his listeners? What were those TB-X series? TB-II was a masterpiece, sure. But believe me, if I were an A&R man in a record company, and if a guy would came me with Mr. Oldfield's all albums that are released after 'The Songs Of Distant Earth' as his demo projects, I would not let him release his music through my label. I'm serious. After listening Tres Lunas, I regretted spending money on those double CD's and decided not to buy the next Oldfield album.
Free Music Review: A nice trance album with Mike's trademark guitar Hit: 4 StarsThis is a step into something relatively new again for Mike Oldfield. He comes back with a very much calmer and nicer feel, leaving behind such different works as Tubular Bells III, Guitars and The Millennium Bell. The music is quite peaceful but still talented, if maybe simpler than almost any other of his works. It is very much more modern- sounding as well. The first song, 'Misty', dedicated to his lady horse of the same name, is a real delight, a very fresh opening to the album. A smart melody and rythm drives you on and the main melody of 'Tres Lunas' is played for the first time. So comes 'No Man's Land', a nice track inspired by the desert. 'Return to the Origin' is one of the best numbers Mike has made for ages. It's so refreshing and enthusiastic that it almost makes you feel like a child. You'll remember the best Mike's works for a second if you are a follower of his music. His sister sally repeats the word 'Return' while some great and expressive gyuitars flow freely over a deep and beating rythm. That's reaaly a wonder. 'Landfall' is a little wonder in itself. The repetitive piano takes you to a very sea- feeling atmosphere while guitars and other instruments play with the simple melody. 'Viper' is a very progressive track that follows a more than simple melody. It's full with original sounds.'Turtle Island' takes you to Spain in a very good sounding spanish guitar melody. This is the track in which that polemic "midi" saxophone fits the best. And so, the commercial 'To Be free', that's a real uplifter, with those beautiful lyrics: "My wish would be/ To be free, to be wild/ And to be just like a child". Simple, but so honest. The second half of songs is maybe more introspective and deep. 'Dragonfly' is another little marvel, with that shivery sound imitating the flipping of a dragonfly's wings. And so, one of the best tracks: 'Tres Lunas'. It is a great song, with many different styles of guitars. This is Mike Oldfield in his essence. As he said, the track is based on a strange world with three moons, and they are described in a cycle of a melody and chorus repeated three times. It is one of those Mike Oldfield's themes that reaaly take you to another place. 'Thou Art In Heaven' and 'Sirius' are much deeper and trancer tracks that need a few more listens to get into them, but they're almost more evocative than the rest. They have a very cosmic feel as well. The ending title, 'No Man's Land Reprise' is a very moody ending to the album. I expected something more joyful from a easy-listening album from the optimistic Oldfield. But it still sounds romantic and nostalgic, a beautiful duet by a guitar and a saxophone. The overall feeling of the album for anybody who knows Mike's works from the past, is an average work in his ranking but with some beautiful tunes that make you really feel Mike's more alive than ever. It sounds like a mixture from 'The Songs of Distant Earth' and 'Guitars'. A nice album to have.
Free Music Review: Huge dissapointment Hit: 2 StarsWell - Mike's last three albums are a real dissapoitment for most of his fans.semms that he got to much into all of this New-age and computer stuff. While "Guitars" were simply boring and without that "something" that Mike's music always had, "Millenium Bell" was a simple mistake - it had maybe 2 good tracks, the rest sounded like a filler.i thought that it was just a small crisis that Mike sometimes had before ("earth Moving","crises") - i was wrong. After two years Mike Had came with "tres lunas" - an interactive music/game experience.this album contains 2 cd's - first one with music, second one with deo game.the demo of the game is definitly not what oldfield fans are thinking when they are buying album so i will write only about music. The album is filled with a modern and sleepy computerised new age music.ok - the tracks here are maybe not horrible, but they all definitive have lackness of soul and good ideas.listen to opening track "Misty" - polished synth sounds, gentle guitar...suddenly out of nowhere the awfull synth saxophone is coming.Oldfield destroyed the beauty of it by himself.the same is with "sirius","No thou art in heaven" or "turtle island".they are simply not good.and "To be free" the only commercial song from here could be simply recorded by anyone else. but thanks god, Mike put some beter stuff too here - "No man's land","return to origin" and more dynamic title track are sounding a bit like good old Oldfield music.but it is too little to give it 3 stars. Anyway - bad album from an Excellent musician. better go ahead and listen to "Songs of hte distant earth".
Free Music Review: I have the one with bonus tracks... Hit: 5 StarsIt does not appear to be available through amazon.com, though. The disc was won on eBay and is made in Germany. After the 'To Be Free' radio edit there is an additional 7 tracks: 15. In the Beginning; 16. Let There be Light; 17. Supernova; 18. Magellan; 19. First Landing; 20. Oceania; and 21. Tubular World. These last several tracks are mixed together and make up what is one gorgeous piece of music! Mike Oldfield at his absolute best! The only complaint I have is that this bonus material causes the disc to run just over 80-minutes. Audio cd's can't handle more than 80-minutes so during the last track my cd player goes crazy and cuts the piece short. The recording company needs to see that these selections go on a separate disc so they may be listened to in their entirety. All in all this is a great cd and 'To Be Free', with his sister Sally handling the vocals, is an outstanding track. Unreservedly recommended.
