Free Music Review: Flawed but enjoyable
Hit: 4 Stars

Nothing Mike does will top the sheer inventiveness of the original, and it would take very little to better the dreadful "Tubular Bells 2." Here, Mike has succeeded in producing an adequate (if less memorable than some of his others) album that isn't reminiscent of the previous two. This is more in keeping with his "Islands/Heaven's Open" period, featuring a mix of pop tunes and short instrumentals. While not terribly inspired (but hey--even at his worst, Oldfield's still better than most of the cookie-cutter garbage out there), there are a few real standouts among the tracks.
"Outcast" features Mike at his guitar-blazing best, a raging instrumental full of fire and passion. Mike is a talent with numerous instruments (see the original Tubular Bells), and his proficiency with the guitar is showcased here.
"Man in the rain" is the album's most pop-oriented track, featuring longtime Oldfield vocalist Anita Hegerland on a song reminiscent of "Moonlight Shadow." It's pretty standard stuff, but entertaining and worth a listen.
The best instrumental on the album, "Top of the morning" is a thundering (though repetitive, but I'm not complaining) piano work. My favorite.
The last track, "Far above the clouds," begins slowly, with a short spoken piece by a child (one of Mike`s?), then it's three minutes or so of instrumental explosion--guitars, piano and keys, drums, and of course, tubular bells. It's also repetitive, but never boring, and a good send-off for the album.
I also enjoyed the eerie "Serpent dream" and the slightly creepy "Inner Child."
This is certainly an improvement on part 2, and although flawed, it's worth a look. Longtime Oldfield fans might be frustrated by the occasional unevenness of the material, but again, it's not bad.

Free Music Review: Surprisingly good!

I was very surprised to see TB3 at the music store two years ago since I hadn't heard anything about Mike Oldfield releasing anything new. Of course "Tubular bells" is a very strong commercial brand and one can't help thinking that the good old Mike is trying to get the most out of the impact this label has on music lovers instead of calling this album, I don't know, "The top of the morning" or "Far above the clouds". But since I adored TB and TB2 I decided to give it a try. As a matter of fact the techno intro made me have second thoughts about buying this album, but since I am a patient guy, fortunately I didn't skip it. I ended up buying it as I loved the rest of the album.

Everyone, throughout their life, experiences what they call the tastes' evolution. There were so many bands and singers I was mad about in my teen years whose music seems so childish to me now, and on the other hand, there were so many other ones whose music took so many years to reach me, like classical music for instance. I remember my dad taking me almost by force to every symphonic concert or opera (since he was a musician) when I was around 10-14 years old. I own about four hundred CD-s now and, thanks to my dad, half of them are classical music.

Mike Oldfield is one of the few musicians whose music I loved in my teen years and I love even more now. Yes, TB3 is inferior to TB and TB2, but the Beatles never wrote anything that could at least equal "Yesterday", Led Zeppelin never wrote anything that could even come close to "Stairway to heaven". What is common to all sheer masterpieces is that they're simply hard to top.

And hey, in the nineties' music desert, this album comes out as a true masterpiece!

Free Music Review: Not one of his best but....
Hit: 4 Stars

On first listen, I was ready to take this to the used CD shop. However, repeated listenings have warmed me to it, particularly the driving finale. Oldfield has added new elements to the TB series while discarding some of the older familiar ones. Don't give up on this one after only one listen...give it a few spins. You'll be glad you did.

Free Music Review: Mike Oldfield- Tubular Bells III
Hit: 4 Stars

I just got this last week and so far I like the tracks. I've been listening to Mike Oldfield music since the '70's when he became popular with his music used in the movie The Exorcist. I didn't know he had this disk out, and although its from 1998, its all new to me. If you like Mike Oldfield music you got to check it out!

Free Music Review: Another Tubular Bells - another success
Hit: 4 Stars

It is very simple to review this album. There is a great deal of natural beauty throughout, especially at the beginning and the rousing Bell's finish. Top Of The Morning is probably the best section of an album which is able to act as an excellent sequel in the TB series.
