What do you get when you mix a little bit of Micheal Jordan, Coltrane, and cross it with hip-hop culture? Mike Phillips. Don't get scared becuase you saw Hip-hop. Just as hip-hop has been influenced by jazz, contemporary jazz has been influenced by hip-hop on Mike Phillips debut. Mike Phillips can do things that many cannot and won't dare do with a sax. That's why Jordan himself signed Mike Phillips to Brand Jordan, MJ's footwear and apparel division of Nike. Other on that roster only include athletes!!! Have you heard Kenny G use the sax as a percussion instrument, think not.(See "Beatin'On it") In music you have to have talent without a doubt, but you also can't be the same as your counterparts. Yes Kenny G is good but the way he does it is boring, no appeal. Mike Phillips on the otherhand, makes you wonder how did he do that. Many people have been fortunate enough to see him live, which I hear is a out of this world experience. Last summer he opened for his labelmate Jill Scott and from what I heard he tore the house down. There is only one way you can capture that experience in the studio; and that is to just play. This is what he did on "Just One Take." You actually hear him say stop for some reason during the song. To me thats amazing. If you are still reading this you might as well buy it because you seem interested. The bottom line is if you like contemporary jazz you'll love this cd. If you're old school, you know Miles, Coltrane, Bird; just imagine them born 40 years later, talent wise Mike Phillips is what you get...
