Free Music Review: Music overflowing with soul.

Mike Phillips can do something with his saxophone that no vocals in any other song have been able to do, communicate real, true soul. His fluent playing seems to slip right through you, as though it was a sort of water that had no real substantial form, only the feeling it left behind. That's what it feels like to listen to "You Have Reached Mike Phillips"I bought this CD not sure what to expect, I'd liked what I'd heard so far, the thirty second teasers and reviews I had read, but they all understated his talent. I'm not sure if it's raw talent or just the ability to communicate. Either way, that's exactly what he does, communicate, no words needed. Not only does this CD have soul, but it has vibes too, songs that even as you let yourself feel the song, you find yourself nodding your head to the beat. He has a whole range of different songs, from the straightforward saxophone serenade of "You Have Reached Mike Phillips (prelude)" to the creative jazz splashed spoken word composition "A True Story (Tabernacle - ATL)" and finally, to the R&B single (with of course a sax solo) called "Wonderful and Special" featuring Jazdin Reddy. If there were words enough to express how magnificent this album is, I'd write a much longer review, but there aren't. All I can say is that this CD has as much soul as any album out there, or more.

I never knew contemporary jazz quite like this before,"You have reached Mike Phillips" is truly refreshing from start to finish. The title track sets the tone, the 42nd street subway sound effects gives this track style- "just One take" is the perfect relaxer, sit back and enjoy this one, as well as "Will you stick with me". Slick production reigns on "Baby Calls" thanks to Wayman Tisdale, this smooth, sexy track is perfect for that romantic, champagne filled night, both Tisdale and Phillips add the smooth to the background vocals on this one. If vocals is whatcha lookin for "Wonderful and Special" has it, awesome vocals by Producer/Musician/singer Jazdin Reddy, it's that new generation Philly Soul with Mike blazin the sax-I'm surprised this was not a single and video, definitely addictive. If you don't have this one...and you call yourself a musiclover, you should be shame! This cd should be in everyone's music collection. When I seen and heard Mike Phillip on BET'S Lyrical Cafe, I was mesmerized and I'm glad I reached Mike Phillips and If you haven't..... reach for him today, you'll be glad you did.Free Music Review: Team Jordan has a new star!

Hidden Beach recordings has come correct with some good CD's as of late. We all are fans of Jill Scott, and The "Unwrapped" jazz CD is probably the hottest Jazz CD in America and has been since it's release last year. Well their newest artist, jazz musician Mike Phillips, falls right in line with their cutting edge approach to music. Phillips has said that with this CD he wanted to give people "something different than what's heard on all of the easy listening stations" and that's just what he does. This CD is littered with Roger Troutman keyboards tricks, subtle samples like SOS Band's "Do It Tonight" on track 7(it took me a while to catch that one) and all around innovative things that you don't normally hear on a jazz CD. My favorite cuts are 2,4.7,9,10,12,14,16 and 17....Just about the whole damn CD!! My favorite is probably the title cut, track 17, and Track 7 which is a DJ meets Saxophone affair. Definitely a CD for your collection, a must have for true music lovers and perfect to marinate on when you are rollin or chillin at da crib.Free Music Review: Thank God!! I was lucky enough to be at the Hidden Beach Recordings launch party in 2000 and I have been waiting for this cd ever since I saw mike perform there. The three acts that performed where Mike Phillips first, then Brenda Russell and Jill Scott closed it out. Since then I have purchased the company's WHO IS JILL SCOTT and live EXPERIENCE CDs the Brenda Russell PARIS RAIN CD and the wonderful UNWRAPPED. I have never been disapointed so I expected to love this CD as well. BUT even expecting to love it, it BLOWS AWAY MY IT IS SIMPLY PHENOMINAL!!! SUPERB!!!!!! THE BEST EVER FIRST ALBUM by a musician I have ever heard and I have a big collection!!!!!!!!This is so good I can't stop playing it!!!
His energy is so powerful. I perdict this will be a CD by which all others to follow will be judged!!!!!!!
Quite simply, IT DOESNT GET BETTER and I am a harsh critic. This is my first review ever. There isn;t a bad song on the entire CD.
Order this one and you will be moved to write a review as well.

Free Music Review: Can it get any better???

I was searching around for something new and exciting. I'm a huge Paul Taylor fan so I'm no Newbie to the Alto joints. When I heard snippets of this CD, I was intrigued by this 'cat'. I thought I had to get a listen. Well I went right out that day and picked up the CD, straight on a whim. Let me say, I'm not disappointed at all. Mike has found a way to blend uptempo 'street' grooves with smooth jazz improvs that light each and every track. And having his daughter 'blow' on here touched my heart. I'm still listening and still smiling. My 10 year old son plays the Alto sax, has been for the last 2 years, and let me tell you, track # 4, Just One take has him amped. This is a CD that he and I can jam to together. Thanks Mike, thanks Hidden beach for a Cd that I am proud to say I bought... and anybody that's contemplating coping this joint, do so now, without delay. You will not be disappointed! One love... Jus
