Free Music Review: Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

Genre does not work. This is a theme that I run through my music reviews. Try to turn even a musically literate person on to a piece or artist, and they'll ask what type of music.

Ok! We need these labels for reference points. But I will never say the word fusion to discuss this amazing, from the gods music. Is it jazz? It sounds nothing be-bop. Nothing that we knew as jazz until 1970. Is it rock? Does it sound like the Beatles, Stones, Doors, even Miles Hereo Hendrix. Any of the defining voices when Miles recorded this in Columbia studios, the morning after Woodstock ended, August, 1969?

I don't know what I am making such a fuss about. The master Miles said it perfectly. "Directions In Music." This was printed atop that black acid double LP gatefold cover, so long ago.

It is a direction taken when one of the world's most creative musicians listens to some more of the worlds creative musicians: Sly Stone, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown. Even if Miles Davis did not have the Beatles in mind here, anything invention in popular music in 1969 had the Fab Fours invention in the subtext.

It is a direction you take with Dave Holland, Jack Dejonette, Joe Ziwinal, Chick Corea. Some of the youngest, smartest, most edgy, and yes, absolutely electric musicians of the era are here. Even Electric Flag and rock session king Harvey Brooks was invited to join this "Direction In Music."

None of which would matter if the direction, the music, was not so very unique. The six tracks that appeared on the double album in 1970, "Pharroh's Dance," the title track, "Spanish Key" "John McGlaughlan," "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down," and "Sanctuary," are a coctail of form and improvisation, layers of keybroards, collective soloing.

Or should I say a long meditation, a moon voyage, an acid dream. All the music here is simple but layered, shimmering yet solid. The anchoring bass lines, the disorienting stacks of organs and electric pianos, creating rain and fog through which a music city is being born. It is psychedelia on hyper-musicianship. When the best make the simple complex and the complex simple.

There was nothing else like it. All since are pale copies.

No one knew back then that these were picked to make a cohesive double album. There was even MORE than anyone thought. Think about everything I said, and there was MORE.

"Green Dolphin Street," David Crosby's "Guinevere," and Ziwinal's "Double Image," which two years later wound up on
Live-Evil. None of these are lessor tracks. They are more song oriented, shorter pieces, which needed to be sliced for a double album

But in all these tracks, there was, of course amazing playing, and experimenting: with format, tonality, and the possibilities of guitar and trumpet, percussion and electric keyboard. Some of these went unreleased, others wound up on post retirement compilations like Big Fun. But if they had been pulled together in 1970 to make a second great double album, that, whatever its title, would have been just as inventive, as important.

I am not happy with this review. If genre labels don't work, neither do words to describe music that defies description. But I write, I don't play music. And so I have to use words to talk about this that I love, that I am passionate about. What can I write about if not that which gives me so much joy. Has taught me so much.

Complete Bitches Brew Sessions Poster

Miles Davis invented a whole new jazz form with the release of Bitches Brew in 1970, and now here's a whole new way of listening to that jazz rock masterpiece-a 4-CD set containing not just the complete original album and material from the Big Fun, Circle in the Round and Live-Evil sessions, but NINE unreleased tracks totaling about 85 minutes of newly discovered music! And this new longbox version gives you *$20* off the price of the original release!
These historic sessions, recorded between 1969 and 1970 and originally released as a 90-minute double LP, merged jazz and rock into the hybrid genre known as fusion. They remain Miles Davis's most controversial recordings. Davis, along with pianists Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Joe Zawinul; bassist Dave Holland; soprano saxophonist Wayne Shorter; bass clarinetist Benny Maupin; drummers Jack DeJohnette, Billy Cobham, and Lenny White; and percussionist Airto Moreira, went electric with rock rhythms, and the rest, as they say, is history, or as some feel, the end of jazz history.

Now, all of the sessions' 265 minutes are contained on this four-CD set, compiled from alternate takes, nine unreleased tracks, and selections from previously released LPs. The superb remastering reveals the spectral power of Davis's amplified, muted, and open trumpet painting on a swirling harmonic canvas created by Hancock, Corea, and Zawinul, especially on Zawinul's impressionistic "Pharoah's Dance," Shorter's elliptical "Sanctuary," and Davis's rocking "John McLaughlin."

The previously unreleased tracks, including "Yaphet," "Corrado," "Tevere," "The Big Green Serpent," and Zawinul's "Double Image," contain some interesting East Indian motifs and inventive arrangements but will probably not change anyone's mind about this well-debated period of Miles Davis's career. --Eugene Holley Jr.
