Free Music Review: An indispensable recording for any jazz collection

This recording represents an important period in the evolution of jazz music. At the time of its release, rock & roll had firmly established its place in the music world and it seemed as though the acoustic sound of jazz was being overpowered by the electric edginess of rock. Many jazz musicians, including Miles, would eventually experiment with electric instruments, further expanding the dynamic of jazz music. Perhaps that is what makes this album so important. This was made during that period of transition; that period right before the electric explosion. I have listened to this recording over and over and I still find it one of the most dynamic, interesting cd's ever recorded. The music is so layered and textured and full of nuances that it takes many listenings to appreciate its greatness. I hesitate to say these musicians were all at their prime when this was recorded but there certainly was a rare chemistry there. But who cares about all this theorizin! ! g. The upshot is this is a damn great cd and a must have for any jazz enthusiast.
